(AP) \u2014 Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has asked a Connecticut judge to throw out a nearly $1 billion verdict against him and order a new trial in a lawsuit by Sandy Hook families, who say they were subjected to harassment and threats from Jones&#8217; lies about the 2012 Newtown school shooting.<\/p>\n<p>Jones filed the requests Friday, saying Judge Barbara Bellis&#8217; pretrial rulings resulted in an unfair trial and \u201ca substantial miscarriage of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, the amount of the compensatory damages award exceeds any rational relationship to the evidence offered at trial,&#8221; Jones&#8217; lawyers, Norm Pattis and Kevin Smith, wrote in the motion.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Mattei, a lawyer for the 15 plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Jones, declined to comment on the filing Saturday, but said he and other attorneys for the Sandy Hook families will be filing a brief opposing Jones&#8217; request.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty first graders and six educators at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/sandy-hook-elementary-school-shooting\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sandy Hook Elementary School\" class=\"link \">Sandy Hook Elementary School<\/a> died in the attack on Dec. 14, 2012.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Related_video_Conspiracy_theorist_Alex_Jones_ordered_to_pay_nearly_a_billion_dollars\"><\/span>Related video: Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones ordered to pay nearly a billion dollars<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>An FBI agent who responded to the shooting and relatives of eight children and adults killed in the massacre sued Jones for defamation and infliction of emotional distress over his pushing the bogus narrative that the shooting was a hoax staged by \u201ccrisis actors\u201d to impose more gun control.<\/p>\n<p>Six jurors in Waterbury, Connecticut, ordered Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, on Oct. 12 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-school-connecticut-conspiracy-alex-jones-3f579380515fdd6eb59f5bf0e3e1c08f\" data-ylk=\"slk:to pay $965 million\" class=\"link \">to pay $965 million<\/a> in compensatory damages to the plaintiffs and said punitive damages also should be awarded. Bellis has scheduled hearings for early next month to determine the amount of the punitive damages.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, victims&#8217; relatives said in often-emotional testimony that they were threatened and harassed for years by people who believed the lies told on Jones\u2019 show. Strangers showed up at the families\u2019 homes to record them and confronted them in public. People hurled abusive comments on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a>. Relatives said they received death and rape threats.<\/p>\n<p>The verdicts came after another jury in Texas in August ordered Jones and his company <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-austin-texas-violence-e067a8bc031ce48be0810764c7bb3c18\" data-ylk=\"slk:to pay nearly $50 million\" class=\"link \">to pay nearly $50 million<\/a> in damages to the parents of another slain Sandy Hook child. A third trial over the hoax claims, involving two more Sandy Hook parents, is expected to be held near the end of the year in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, who has acknowledged in recent years that the shooting did occur, has blasted the lawsuits and trials on his Austin, Texas-based Infowars show, calling them unfair and a violation of his free speech rights.<\/p>\n<p>But he lost his right to present those defenses when the judges in Connecticut and Texas found him liable for damages by default without trials, for what they called Jones&#8217; repeated failures to turn over some evidence including financial documents and website analytics to the Sandy Hook lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>With liability already established, the trials in both states focused only on how much Jones should pay in damages.<\/p>\n<p>Pattis, Jones&#8217; lawyer, wrote in the motions filed Friday that there was a lack of evidence directly connecting Jones with the people who harassed and threatened the Sandy Hook families. Pattis said the trial resembled a \u201cmemorial service, not a trial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, the families in this case suffered horribly as a result of the murder of their children,\u201d Pattis wrote, adding that Jones did not send people to harass and threaten the families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no competent evidence offered at this trial that he ever did,\u201d he wrote. &#8220;Instead, there was a shocking abuse of a disciplinary default and its transformation into a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of half-truths that misled a jury and resulted in substantial injustice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
