He said in a tweet on Sunday that the GOP was threatening to tank the economy over the issue. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRepublican leaders have made it clear they will crash the economy by putting the United States in default unless we yield to their demand to cut Social Security and Medicare,\u201d Biden <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1584258566755491840\">said<\/a> in the tweet.\u00a0\u201cAnd that\u2019s more than a promise. It\u2019s a threat,\u201d <\/p>\n<p>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif) has accused Democrats of twisting his comments in an interview during which he discussed both preparing for debt ceiling fights and plans to \u201cstrengthen\u201d Social Security and Medicare. <\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t stop Democrats from continuing to hammer the GOP over its pledge to make changes to the crucial program, which is a particular priority for older voters.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy\u00a0Pelosi\u00a0(D-Calif.) on Sunday said Social Security and Medicare are among a number of matters \u201con the line\u201d in this year\u2019s election. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republicans have said that if they win, they want to subject Medicare, Social Security, health blackmail, to lifting the debt ceiling\u2026 So Social Security and Medicare are on the line, a woman\u2019s right to choose is on the line, the planet is on the line, issues that relate to pre<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion drugs,\u201d Pelosi <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/midterm-elections-nancy-pelosi-democrats-face-the-nation\/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab8f&amp;linkId=186743819\">said<\/a> on CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>An AARP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/research\/surveys_statistics\/politics\/2022\/shes-the-difference-likely-voters-50-plus-survey-october-2022-polling-memo.doi.10.26419-2Fres.00570.003.pdf\">survey<\/a> released this month found Social Security and Medicare in the top five issues for voters age 50+ in determining how they\u2019ll cast their midterm ballot.\u00a0And voters in that same age bracket were among the most motivated to vote, and largely undecided. <\/p>\n<p>Sen.\u00a0Elizabeth Warren\u00a0(D-Mass.) weighed in on Twitter Sunday, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWarren\/status\/1584192946127089665\">saying<\/a> that Republicans are \u201calready plotting\u201d to slash the programs if they gain congressional power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHardworking Americans have earned these benefits and no one should take them away,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The House Budget Committee <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HouseBudgetDems\/status\/1584291573730185216\">Tweeted<\/a> Sunday that \u201cDemocrats are fighting to lower costs for families\u201d while \u201cRepublicans are fighting to cut Social Security benefits.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent MSNBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/scalise-acknowledges-gop-plan-change-social-security-medicare-rcna52578?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma\">article<\/a> quoted House Minority Whip Steve Scalise\u00a0(R-La.)\u00a0recently acknowledging the Republican Study Committee\u2019s Fiscal Year 2023 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/banks.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/rsc_2023_budget_final_version.pdf\">Budget<\/a> proposal would change the federal entitlement plans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, Scalise <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/atrupar\/status\/1581643997751103488\">pushed<\/a> back on the characterization of the changes as \u201ccuts,\u201d though the proposed changes would likely mean spending less on the programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>According to Bloomberg, the study committee\u2019s plans would increase the age eligibility threshold for Medicare to 67 and Social Security to 70. Individuals can currently begin receiving Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, and Medicare insurance at age 65.  <\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u00a0Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepKClark\/status\/1584242028996460545\">shared<\/a> the\u00a0MSNBC article on Twitter, and made a few tweaks to the headline, writing \u201cGOP acknowledges GOP plan to cut Medicare and Social Security.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Republican Study Committee <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.speaker.gov\/newsroom\/91922-1\">counts among its members <\/a>158 of the 212 House Republicans, which Democrats have pointed to as showing broad support for the changes to entitlement reforms. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c158 out of 212 House Republicans have called for slashing and privatizing Social Security and ending Medicare as we know it. Pulling the rug out from under hardworking Americans is not a solution to our problems. We can and will strengthen Social Security and Medicare,\u201d Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepRubenGallego\/status\/1583936986154401794\">said<\/a> on Twitter Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sen.\u00a0Ron Johnson\u00a0(R-Wis.) stepped into hot water earlier this year when he suggested the programs should be up for congressional approval each year. <\/p>\n<p>Sen.\u00a0Rick Scott\u00a0(R-Fla.), chair of the Senate GOP campaign arm, also unveiled a \u201cRescue America\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rescueamerica.com\/\">plan,<\/a> which would have allowed Social Security and Medicare to sunset every five years as a way to increase congressional oversight. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans have kept a distance from that proposal, and the House GOP has instead rallied around a \u201cCommitment to America\u201d midterm policy <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.republicanleader.gov\/commitment\/\">platform<\/a>, which aims to \u201csave and strengthen Social Security and Medicare,\u201d with no details. \u00a0\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
