The judge and lawyers in the case were looking to keep people off the jury if they have unshakably strong feelings about the Republican, who isn&#8217;t liked in his hometown.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 presidential election, 87% of Manhattan voters supported Democrat Joe Biden for president. Trump got 12% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re figuring it is going to be, probably, a good solid week for jury selection,\u201d said William Brennan, one of the Trump Organization\u2019s lawyers, as he arrived at the courthouse Monday. \u201dWhen you boil it all down, it is a garden-variety tax case. And that\u2019s how they should look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge Juan Manuel Merchan started things off by bringing the pool of prospective jurors into the courtroom.<\/p>\n<p>They were sworn in as they stood and raised their right hands. Then the judge addressed them for over 20 minutes, describing the case and explaining that they\u2019re seeking unbiased jurors who will decide it solely on the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Merchan told the jury pool the trial would last about six weeks, and that during the case jurors were likely to hear Trump&#8217;s name and the names of his three eldest children, Ivanka, Eric and Donald Trump Jr.<\/p>\n<p>After the introduction, Merchan and the lawyers retreated to a back room out of public view where they allowed prospective jurors who raised their hands to explain why they thought they didn&#8217;t belong on the jury.<\/p>\n<p>Those who were excused from the jury pool emerged from the courtroom, telling reporters they were let go for various reasons, including for medical issues or job-related stresses.<\/p>\n<p>But several said their bias got them a fast exit, including a psychiatrist who said she told them that Trump exhibits <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> narcissistic behavior and the charges related to the company reflect his personality.<\/p>\n<p>Delvin Gerdan, a Manhattan doorman, said he merely expressed that he was opinionated about Trump. He said he was asked if he would be \u201cleaning more toward one side\u201d and he responded \u201cyes.\u201d That was enough to get him excused from the jury pool.<\/p>\n<p>A woman who identified herself only as Adrienne N., 34, said she was excused for reasons other than bias. But she said she was also ready to say she could not be fair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#8217;s guilty in my mind, whatever the case is,\u201d the advertising industry worker said.<\/p>\n<p>The trial is expected to center on the actions and testimony of longtime Trump Organization executive <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/allen-weisselberg-trump-cfo-plea-deal-e36dbd47ee3b0323e1fa102117718011\" data-ylk=\"slk:Allen Weisselberg, who pleaded guilty in August\" class=\"link \">Allen Weisselberg, who pleaded guilty in August<\/a> to accepting more than $1.7 million worth of untaxed perks from the company.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has decried the probe as a \u201cpolitical witch hunt.&#8221; The company&#8217;s lawyers have said the Trump Organization played by the rules.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, the company could be fined more than $1 million. Getting a panel with an open mind, though, could be critical to avoiding a mistrial.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/steve-bannon-politics-donald-trump-new-york-21c8150b589fe3e144bda65c85a91531\" data-ylk=\"slk:another trial in a nearby federal courthouse\" class=\"link \">another trial in a nearby federal courthouse<\/a> ended in a mistrial because of tensions between jurors about political views. That case involved associates of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon who were accused of defrauding a charity founded to help pay for a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven jurors in that case sent a note to the judge asking that another juror be removed because that person had shown an anti-government bias and accused all the others of being liberals.
