\n After draining funding for city pools because of the coronavirus and the city\u2019s massive budget crisis, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday said the public facilities could open sometime this summer thanks to major progress against the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can start a conversation around pools,\u201d de Blasio said at his daily City Hall press briefing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if we\u2019ll get there, but at least we can at least begin that conversation now for the first time, based on what you saw today with those indicators,\u201d de Blasio said, after announcing that just 1 percent of people who received coronavirus tests earlier this week got positive results \u2014 the lowest number since the deadly virus hit the city in March.<\/p>\n

In April the mayor cut $12 million for pools from the Parks Department budget as part of his effort to balance the books while battling the COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not plan on having the pools open for the reason of health and safety,\u201d de Blasio said on NY1 in April.<\/p>\n

Public beaches across the five boroughs are only open for sunbathing and wading. Swimming, barbecuing and sports are prohibited due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe beaches, the pools. We\u2019re now going to be reassessing everything,\u201d de Blasio said, again citing the city\u2019s progress in beating back the pandemic. Hospitalizations and ICU figures are also dropping.<\/p>\n

If the city coronavirus figures continue to plummet then summer fun could return, de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can do that, then we\u2019re having a real conversation about beaches, for sure. If we can do that, there may even be a way to get back to pools. We\u2019re not there yet,\u201d he cautioned.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
