Kathy Hochul stunningly said she didn\u2019t know why it\u2019s \u201cso important\u201d to lock up criminals when confronted by Republican challenger Lee Zeldin over the state\u2019s controversial bail reform law during their first and only debate Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Zeldin, who\u2019s pledged to declare a crime emergency and suspend cashless bail if elected, brought up the issue midway through the televised face-off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy opponent thinks that right now there\u2019s a polio emergency going on but there\u2019s not a crime emergency \u2014 different priorities than I\u2019m hearing from people right now,\u201d the outgoing congressman from Long Island said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not being represented from this governor \u2014 who still, to this moment\u2026hasn\u2019t talked about locking up anyone committing any crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul responded by saying, \u201cAnyone who commits a crime, under our laws, especially with the changes we made to bail, has consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know why that\u2019s so important to you,\u201d the incumbent Democrat added. \u201cAll I know is that we could do more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s startling comments came moments before she refused to answer when Zeldin asked what she would do to address pay-to-play corruption allegations against her and her administration.<\/p>\n<p>Amid what recent polls show has turned into an increasingly tight race, Zeldin said that  \u201call these stories\u201d were among the reasons why Hochul \u201chas lost the trust of so many New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/hochul-zeldin-pay-to-play-241.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"LEE ZELDIN\" class=\"wp-image-24402990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/hochul-zeldin-pay-to-play-241.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/hochul-zeldin-pay-to-play-241.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/hochul-zeldin-pay-to-play-241.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Republican candidate for New York governor U.S. Rep Lee Zeldin pledged to declare a crime emergency and suspend cashless bail.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP\/ Mary Altaffer<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Zeldin specifically cited the scandal over the $637 million worth of overpriced COVID-19 tests the state bought from a Hochul donor after he hosted a fundraiser for her and \u201cjust days later, she suspends unilaterally New York\u2019s competitive bidding laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is just one of many examples,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>But when he demanded that Hochul detail the \u201cspecific measures\u201d she\u2019d pledge to deal with the allegations, she wouldn\u2019t say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t accept the premise. There is no pay-to-play corruption,\u201d Hochul insisted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has never been a quid pro quo, a policy change or decision made because of a contribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul continued, \u201cAnd the policies are we don\u2019t do it anyhow. So why would I change? This fear is real,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul also refused to commit to help pay an estimated $1 billion to house the more than 21,400 migrants who\u2019ve flooded into the city, calling it a \u201cfederal problem\u201d and predicting that the cost won\u2019t be that high.<\/p>\n<p>During another key exchange on the subject of mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for students, Zeldin staked out a definitive position while Hochul offered a conditional response.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear to all the parents who are out there. I will not mandate COVID vaccines for your kids. Ever,\u201d Zeldin said.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul, meanwhile, answered the yes-or-no question by saying, \u201cNot at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to talk about parental control over this but I\u2019d also say it\u2019s something that comes down to the legislature, anyhow,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislature makes the determination in consultation with health experts for next year\u2019s school year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During an especially contentious back-and-forth, Hochul called Zeldin one of former President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cstrongest and most loyal supporters\u201d and highlighted his House votes against certifying President Biden\u2019s electoral victories in Arizona and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>Zeldin fired back by noting how Hochul, after succeeding ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo last year following his resignation over a sexual harassment scandal, appointed state Sen. Brian Benjamin (D-Manhattan) as her No. 2.<\/p>\n<p>Zeldin called Benjamin \u201cthe architect of cashless bail\u201d and referenced his indictment in an alleged campaign-finance fraud scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, that guy who got arrested and had to resign. Andrew Cuomo resigned over a sexual harassment scandal in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKathy Hochul is out trying to crawl across the finish line. She\u2019s trying to survive this election,\u201d Zeldin said last week.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Hochul has been dogged by pay-to-play allegations, including the no-bid, $637 million deal under which the state\u00a0overpaid for COVID-19 test kits\u00a0resold by New Jersey-based Digital Gadgets whose founder, Charlie Tebele, held two fundraisers for her.<\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0took place\u00a0just four days before Hochul \u2014 who also\u00a0hired Tebele\u2019s son\u00a0as a campaign worker \u2014 issued an emergency order that suspended competitive bidding rules for pandemic-related supplies<\/p>\n<p>Last month, The Post exclusively obtained video of Hochul\u00a0entering the Upper East Side townhouse\u00a0of another deep-pocketed donor, Alexander Rovt, who\u2019s chairman of the One Brooklyn Health Systems network.<\/p>\n<p>One Brooklyn got bailed out by the state in April and in July was revealed to be in line to potentially form a $50 million partnership with the NewYork-Presbyterian network under a plan hatched by Hochul\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Zeldin \u2014 who\u2019s trailed Hochul in the polls by as many as 24 percentage points \u2014 began closing the gap last month as the race entered its final weeks, with one Democratic source recently\u00a0likening her campaign\u00a0to \u201ca hot mess on the best of days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Oct. 15, the Real Clear Politics website\u00a0changed its ranking\u00a0of the Nov. 8 election from \u201cLeans Dem\u201d to \u201cToss Up,\u201d one day after Democratic polling company Schoen Cooperman Research said Hochu\u2019s lead had\u00a0shrunk to just 6 points.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Republican polling company co\/efficient said its latest survey showed the race was in a dead heat, with Zeldin\u00a0holding a razor-thin edge\u00a0over Hochul, 45.6%-45.3%.<\/p>\n<p>The remainder of those polled were still undecided.<\/p>\n<p>The shift came as Zeldin hammered Hochul over surging crime and the state\u2019s controversial 2019 bail reform law while she ran ads attacking him over his opposition to abortion and his ties to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Hochul\u2019s campaign belatedly pivoted to running ads about public safety, which surveys have consistently shown to be a top concern among voters, along with inflation and the economy.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
