Korea tests nuke [Video]<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>TOKYO (AP) \u2014 Officials from the United States and its Asian allies Japan and South Korea suspect North Korea is preparing for a nuclear test, and vice foreign ministers from the three countries said Wednesday their joint response would be &#8220;decisive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cho Hyundong, South Korea&#8217;s First Vice Foreign Minister, said the trio is bolstering their defense cooperation to deter the growing possibility of North Korea&#8217;s use of nuclear weapons since the adoption in September of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/asia-united-states-south-korea-nuclear-weapons-north-acad3f4abf01c88a2dd8be02860d8c8e\" data-ylk=\"slk:legislation spelling out scenarios where it would use nukes\" class=\"link \">legislation spelling out scenarios where it would use nukes<\/a>, including preemptively.<\/p>\n<p>North Korea&#8217;s new nuclear policy is \u201ccreating a serious tension on the Korean Peninsula,\u201d Cho told a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> conference after talks with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Takeo Mori.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouth Korea and the U.S. will step up their extended deterrence by utilizing all the elements of the national power and show an overwhelming, decisive response to any use of a nuclear weapon by North Korea,\u201d Cho said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022 alone, North Korea has launched more than 20 ballistic missiles at unprecedented pace, including one that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/seoul-south-korea-north-joint-chiefs-of-staff-1026206c80666f1fcdb3983ebf45e14b\" data-ylk=\"slk:overflew northern Japan\" class=\"link \">overflew northern Japan<\/a> in early October. (AP Photo\/Eugene Hoshiko, Pool)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Sherman, during her meeting with Cho on Tuesday ahead of the three-way talks, criticized North Korea&#8217;s military actions as \u201cirresponsible, dangerous and destabilizing&#8221; and said the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-japan-united-states-tokyo-south-korea-7397d3c81ecc6ceff76a4f0ffe25ec24\" data-ylk=\"slk:United States will fully use its military capabilities\" class=\"link \">United States will fully use its military capabilities<\/a>, including nuclear, as she warned North Korea against escalating its provocations.<\/p>\n<p>Sherman stressed again Wednesday that the cooperation among the three countries are \u201cironclad,&#8221; citing signs of Japan and South Korea improving their troubled ties over historical wartime-related disputes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is so much we can achieve and are achieving when our countries work together,\u201d Sherman said.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second in-person meeting of the three officials since conservative South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol took office in May, signaling an improvement in difficult ties between Tokyo and Seoul.
