Fetterman had a number of awkward pauses and stumbles that are sure to be seized upon by the GOP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFetterman\u2019s team never should have agreed to this debate,\u201d one Pennsylvania Democratic operative told The Hill on the condition of anonymity. \u201cHe still clearly has serious health issues.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A second Pennsylvania-based Democratic strategist concurred.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good question,\u201d the strategist said. \u201cYou can\u2019t pretend you didn\u2019t see what you saw. You can\u2019t wish it or explain it away. You have to dig in and deal with it. It\u2019s going to mean they\u2019ll turn the heat up with Oz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. But millions of Americans voted for him because they liked his attitude and authenticity,\u201d Coons said of Trump.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMy gut hunch is a lot of Pennsylvanians when they see John Fetterman in his hoodie and his sweatpants, and look at look the record of what he\u2019s done in Braddock as lieutenant governor will choose him over, quite frankly, someone who is, frankly, very polished on television, but has positions on things like abortion that are outside the mainstream of what Pennsylvanians will vote for.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fetterman-Oz race holds a uniquely important spot in this year\u2019s midterms because it is one of just a handful that could determine which party controls the Senate\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman led in the polls throughout the summer and into the fall and for months after the primaries Democrats viewed Oz as a weak candidate running in a state won by President Biden. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., at Stolen Sun Craft Brewing Company in Exton, Pa.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic nominee after the debate pointed to a note from his doctor saying he was fit to serve and his campaign criticized what it called \u201cerror-filled\u201d closed captioning. The closed captioning was requested by Fetterman and agreed to by Oz to compensate for the auditory processing issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the debate, Oz\u2019s campaign stuck to talking points about the economy, fracking and crime. But others who support the longtime television doctor waded into talk about Fetterman\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAnyone watching today could tell there was only one person on that stage who can represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate: @droz,\u201d said Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), an Oz backer. \u201cIt\u2019s sad to see John Fetterman struggling so much. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, talks to reporters at the Capitol in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman\u2019s issues on the stage were clear from the outset of the hourlong event. In his introductory answer, the lieutenant governor, who used a closed captioning system to make up for his auditory processing deficits, told viewers, \u201cHi. Good night everyone.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the opening 20 minutes of the debate, one national Democratic operative responded to The Hill with an emoji of a monkey covering its eyes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that the debate will be decisive, but I\u2019d question anyone who advocated for Fetterman to do one at all,\u201d the Democratic operative said after the debate. \u201cThe more this race has shifted its focus away from Oz and become a referendum on Fetterman, the worse it\u2019s got. I don\u2019t see how tonight helped.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fetterman campaign\u2019s response to the debate was quick.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after midnight, a campaign spokesman announced it raised more than $1 million in the three hours post-debate.<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman argued that the note from a doctor saying that he \u201chas no work restrictions,\u201d coupled with his presence on the stage, should be enough to dissuade the need for him to release detailed medical records. The campaign has declined to do that since he suffered the stroke in May.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The campaign also revealed in the ensuing hours that it would unveil a new ad highlighting what would otherwise be the major talking point from the event: Oz\u2019s remark that abortion decisions should be made between \u201ca woman, her doctor and local political leaders.\u201d According to the campaign, the ad will \u201ctarget suburban women voters across Pennsylvania in the coming weeks.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cAnytime you do debate prep, the number one thing you tell candidates is don\u2019t say anything that becomes an ad,\u201d said one Pennsylvania Democratic operative. \u201cWhile we all watch debates, not that many other people watch them, but you just don\u2019t want to f\u2014 up and create moments and Oz really failed at that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) told The Hill that while Fetterman \u201chad some stumbles, the biggest stumble in the whole debate\u201d was Oz\u2019s abortion comment, which President Biden\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1585296671008768000?s=20&amp;t=11jsR2r1VWsCXEmBPSR22Q\">also criticized Oz for<\/a>. Ed Rendell fields questions about the state budget impasse following a health care bill signing ceremony at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa., in 2009. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he hadn\u2019t done this, then people would say he\u2019s hiding and [not] being transparent. \u2026 It\u2019s damned if you do, damned if you don\u2019t,\u201d Rendell said, adding that he wasn\u2019t sure how the debate will play with voters in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cPeople were worried before the debate. They\u2019re worried after the debate. They\u2019d be worried if he hit a home run,\u201d Rendell continued. \u201cThis is the time of year nobody is satisfied with anything. They are worried about everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have attempted to keep the spotlight on Oz\u2019s abortion comment, but the lion\u2019s share of attention remains on Fetterman\u2019s health and what transpired on Tuesday in Harrisburg.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Fetterman campaign did not respond when asked by The Hill about any details regarding the candidate\u2019s debate prep.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement post-debate, Joe Calvello, a Fetterman spokesman, criticized the event \u2014 hosted by Nexstar, which owns The Hill \u2014 because the Democratic nominee \u201cwas working off of delayed captions filled with errors.\u201d A Nexstar spokesman noted that Fetterman\u2019s campaign agreed to the set-up for the closed captioning process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBoth candidates were offered the opportunity for two full rehearsals with the same equipment used in tonight\u2019s debate; Mr. Fetterman chose to do only one. \u2026 It is unfortunate that Mr. Fetterman is now criticizing the closed captioning process employed by Nexstar during tonight\u2019s debate,\u201d Nexstar communications chief Gary Weitman <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wfxrtv.com\/news\/politics\/nexstar-refutes-fetterman-campaigns-debate-caption-criticisms\/\">said in a\u00a0statement<\/a>. \u201cIn fact, Nexstar\u2019s production team went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the effectiveness of the closed captioning process, and to accommodate several last-minute requests of the Fetterman campaign. The closed captioning process functioned as expected during rehearsal and again during tonight\u2019s debate. We regret that Mr. Fetterman and his campaign feel otherwise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0One national Democratic strategist pushed back on the notion of most <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> attention being on Fetterman\u2019s stroke, arguing that his performance isn\u2019t a priority for voters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone knew John Fetterman was recovering from a stroke before the debate and I think after the debate everybody knows John Fetterman is still recovering from a stroke,\u201d the strategist said. \u201cSo I\u2019m not sure what is new or unearthed about that.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the most recent\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2022\/senate\/pa\/pennsylvania_senate_oz_vs_fetterman-7695.html\">RealClearPolitics average<\/a>, Fetterman leads by a 1.3-percentage point margin.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The urgency to nab a win in the Keystone State was underscored earlier on Tuesday when the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a group run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.),\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/25\/pennsylvania-senate-election-gop-groups-spend-6m-in-fetterman-oz-race.html\">redirected $6.2 million<\/a>\u00a0in ad spending from New Hampshire to Pennsylvania.
