The debris fragment would have passed within\u00a03 miles (5 kilometers) of the station, so the station skedaddled into a higher orbit<\/p>\n<p>The space junk wasn\u2019t the result of Russian cosmonauts taking out the trash or some guy in Moscow putting too much lighter <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gHjhP07HyAs&amp;ab_channel=fullmann\">fluid on his barbeque<\/a>. Instead, it\u2019s due to Russia blowing up a\u00a0defunct Cosmos 1408 satellite in a 2021 missile test that was heavily-criticized.<\/p>\n<p>That explosion created around 1,500 pieces of debris at the time, and U.S. officials condemned the anti-satellite missile test, calling it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/11\/15\/politics\/russia-anti-satellite-weapon-test-scn\/index.html\">\u201ca reckless and dangerous act.\u201d<\/a> But they say that about a lot of things.<\/p>\n<p>Space junk is becoming a bit of problem, even if it\u2019s not likely to ding your car on road anytime soon. There are big chunks like nonfunctional satellites and numerous smaller chunks like pieces of blown-up satellites.
