<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Natural-gas prices were poised for their largest yearly percentage rise in 23 years before erasing much of that gain in the span of six sessions this month. <\/p>\n<p> The U.S. market shifted from worries about tight supplies to the potential for lower heating fuel demand on the back of warmer weather forecasts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Keep in mind that \u201cvolatility in natural gas is crazy high,\u201d says Robert Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho Americas. \u201cIt is the land of the brave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. consumers got a reality check when the Energy Information Administration\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/outlooks\/steo\/report\/WinterFuels.php\" class=\"icon none\">Winter Fuels report <\/a>released on Oct. 12 forecast a 28% rise in the cost to\u00a0heat their homes with natural gas\u00a0for the winter season, which the government agency said runs from October through March.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Here\u2019s how much more U.S. households will pay to heat their homes this winter<\/p>\n<p>The outlook assumed \u201cbase case\u201d winter weather as forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the time, and natural-gas prices<br \/>\n        NG00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210189548\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-3.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       were up nearly 81% year to date by the end of the Oct. 13 trading session, on track for their best year since 1999, according to Dow Jones Market Data.<\/p>\n<p>By Oct. 21, however, gas prices posted six consecutive session declines, dropping by 26% to $4.959 from $6.741 on strategist at HTS Commodities, a division of Hilltop Securities.<\/p>\n<p>In true volatile fashion, natural gas recouped around 13% of its price losses during a two-session rise that ended Oct. 25. \u201cIf you are [a] volatility junkie, then natural gas could be a golden opportunity right now,\u201d says Mizuho\u2019s Yawger.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" Mizuho<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Based on the relative strength index, a momentum indicator in technical analysis,\u00a0prices are in \u201csuper oversold territory\u201d and screaming \u201cbuy,\u201d he says. But \u201cmake no mistake about it\u2014natural gas is a monster that has wiped out many experienced traders over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p> U.S. supplies have been rising in preparation for higher demand as colder weather sets in. The EIA pegged total working gas supplies in storage at 3.342 billion cubic feet for the week ended Oct. 14, up 111 billion for the week.<\/p>\n<p>The EIA\u2019s reported five-year average storage deficits have narrowed significantly, says Yawger.<\/p>\n<p>NOAA forecast on Oct. 20 that La Ni\u00f1a would return for a third-consecutive winter, leading to warmer-than-average temperatures for the Southwest, and along the Gulf Coast and eastern seaboard.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the European Union has \u201cdodged a major supply bullet,\u201d thanks partly to gas supplies from the U.S. and Qatar, says HTS Commodities\u2019 Kunisch, with German, French and Spanish gas stocks in storage above 93% filled.<\/p>\n<p>That is despite EU turmoil with Russia, evolving EU energy policy that is \u201celiminating\u201d Russian energy imports, and concerns about the EU not having adequate gas stocks this winter to heat homes, he says. European benchmark December <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theice.com\/products\/27996665\/Dutch-TTF-Gas-Futures\/data?marketId=5439161\" class=\"icon none\">Dutch TTF natural gas traded<\/a> at 133.11 euros ($131.93) per megawatt hour on Oct. 25, their lowest since June.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., November natural-gas futures<br \/>\n        NGX22,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210194879\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-3.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       settled at $5.606 per million British thermal units on Oct. 26. Yawger expects an average price of $5.75 this winter. A warm winter, or failure of Freeport LNG to restart its liquefaction facility after a fire led to a shutdown in June, which can contribute to domestic supplies in storage, could pressure prices, while an escalation of the Russian-Ukraine war could rally the market, he says.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent note, analysts at BofA Securities maintained their \u201cbearish\u201d $4.50 per million Btus average forecast for next year, with demand growth set to slow in 2023.
