The way you end a sentence (or capitalize it) can say a lot about how you\u2019re feeling. A hard period at the end\u2014while grammatically correct\u2014is often interpreted as \u201cI\u2019m upset\u201d or \u201cthis is serious.\u201d I think that\u2019s why some people turn to the classic ellipses\u00a0(\u2026).<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>Why Is Texting in no caps So Trendy?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_you_okay%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Are you okay\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ellipsis are an informal type of punctuation, which lends itself well to texting\u2019s informal nature. Some people seem to like ellipses as a sort of middle ground between a period and an exclamation point.It\u2019s often used in the middle of a sentence to represent trailing off in thought or taking a long pause for dramatic effect.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of a sentence, it can have a different feeling. Again, it can be used for trailing off on a thought. But ending a sentence with ellipses can also have a sort of ominous or passive-aggressive feel to it. Here are a couple of examples.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOkay\u2026I\u2019ll be there soon\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure about that\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds good\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s great\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I don\u2019t know about you, but when I read those messages, I don\u2019t have a good feeling about any of them. I\u2019m really not sure which emotion is being conveyed. Now let\u2019s use those exact same phrases with different punctuation (or no punctuation).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOkay, I\u2019ll be there soon\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you sure about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s great!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You may not realize it, but the change in punctuation makes these phrases come across more clearly. \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll be there soon\u201d is plain and informative. \u201cOkay! I\u2019ll be there soon!\u201d is excited. \u201cOkay\u2026I\u2019ll be there soon\u2026\u201d sounds like the person isn\u2019t looking forward to seeing you. Think of a long pause and a sigh.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, \u201cThat\u2019s great!\u201d shows excitement. A simple \u201cThat\u2019s great\u201d without punctuation is a calm show of support. But \u201cThat\u2019s great\u2026\u201d trails off in a way that could come across as disingenuous. And\u00a0sl<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing a period on the end can give it a petty \u201cgood for you\u201d attitude.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What%E2%80%A6are_you_trying_to_say\"><\/span>What\u2026are you trying to say?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This is why elipses can come across so ominously. You have to go out of your way to add those extra periods, and the recipient may think you did it for a reason. You\u2019re leaving the interpretation up to them to decide. \u201cAre they not happy to see me or is this just how they text\u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commas, periods, and exclamation points have relatively clear meanings in the texting world. Ellipses are an enigma, and that can be a scary thing to receive. If you want to end a message informally, I think simply not using any punctuation is the way to go. Texting doesn\u2019t have to look like an English report.<\/p>\n<p>If this all sounds very complicated\u2014you\u2019re right! Language is often very imprecise. You might not pick up on the emotion someone is trying to convey even in spoken conversations.
