\n More than 30,000 people have signed a petition asking Netflix to remove \u201cCuties,\u201d a movie they claim sexualizes children.<\/p>\n

The film, which premiered at this year\u2019s Sundance Film Festival, premieres on the streaming service Sept. 9. The trailer was released earlier this week on YouTube<\/a>. It has an NC-17 rating, according to Jam Press.<\/p>\n

\u201cEleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family\u2019s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew,\u201d the film\u2019s descript<\/a>ion reads on the site.<\/p>\n

However, Metro reports that the original summary was much more salacious: \u201cAmy, 11, becomes fascinated with a twerking dance crew. Hoping to join them, she starts to explore her femininity, defying her family\u2019s traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix told the outlet the changes were made to ensure accuracy.<\/p>\n

The main character, Amy, is a Senegalese Muslim girl who lives in a poor neighborhood in France.<\/p>\n

The French film, which also goes by \u201cMignonnes,\u201d was written and directed by Ma\u00efmouna Doucour\u00e9, who is also Senegalese. She won the jury award at Sundance for directing the movie.<\/p>\n

Her inspiration for the film came from seeing an amateur talent show in Paris. \u201cThere were these girls onstage dressed in a really sexy fashion in short, transparent clothes,\u201d the first-time director told ScreenDaily. \u201cThey danced in a very sexually suggestive manner. There also happened to be a number of African mothers in the audience. I was transfixed, watching with a mixture of shock and admiration. I asked myself if these young girls understood what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She spent a year interviewing kids in the area to find out why they wanted to act this way.<\/p>\n

Petitioners say the film exploits children. \u201cThe movie \u2018Cuties\u2019 shows children dressed provocatively, dancing sexually and is rated only for adult viewers,\u201d reads their post on Change.org. \u201cIt was created for the entertainment of adults who are pedophiles. Please sign the petition to protect our children from exploitation in movies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some Twitter users were equally enraged. Much of the anger was directed at the marketing poster for the film, which shows the young cast posing in cropped dance costumes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you call a movie \u2018Cuties\u2019 and promote it like this: That\u2019s sexualizing 11yr old kids,\u201d wrote @iDavid76. \u201cShame on you, @Netflix.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several Twitter users compared the French marketing of the flick to the Netflix poster.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing about the Netflix campaign for Cuties is how disgustingly sexualized these girls are,\u201d posted @wwarrior_1. \u201cCompare the poster and blurb from Netflix versus the ones on IMDb, s\u2009-\u2009-\u2009t is as different as night and day. Someone should get fired.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack girls suffering from Adultification bias is very f\u2009-\u2009-\u2009king real,\u201d said another user. \u201cNo child should ever be put into any disgusting situation like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
