On a Mac, you must change your system theme to dark mode.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft Office includes black and dark gray themes. The system-wide dark mode on Windows 10, Windows 11, and Mac will now affect Office apps, but you can also separately choose a dark theme for Office apps like Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint on Windows.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Enable_Microsoft_Offices_Dark_Mode_on_Windows\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">How to Enable Microsoft Office\u2019s Dark Mode on Windows<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/change-the-look-and-feel-of-office-63e65e1c-08d4-4dea-820e-335f54672310\">Microsoft<\/a>, Office\u2019s dark mode is only available if you have a Microsoft 365 (previously known as Office 365) subscription on Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. (However, you can change your theme to \u201cdark gray\u201d on Office 2016 and Office 2013. This even works on Windows 7.)<\/p>\n<p>To change your theme on Windows, click the \u201cFile\u201d menu at the top left corner of an Office application like Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-844999\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/1-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"346\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Click the \u201cAccount\u201d option in the sidebar. On the right, open the \u201cOffice Theme\u201d dropdown menu, and then select your desired theme.<\/p>\n<p>The default theme in Microsoft Office is now \u201cUse system setting.\u201d This means Office will only use a dark theme if you have your Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC set to use a dark theme.<\/p>\n<p>You may still have your Office installation set to use another option, like \u201cColorful,\u201d which was previously the default setting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-845000\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/2-2.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"532\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To enable dark mode, select \u201cBlack\u201d for the darkest possible Office style.<\/p>\n<p>(If you prefer sticking with the \u201cUse system setting\u201d option, you can choose a dark Windows system theme from Settings &gt; Personalization &gt; Colors on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Select \u201cDark\u201d under \u201cChoose your color\u201d on Windows 10 or under \u201cChoose your mode\u201d on Windows 11.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-845001 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select the &quot;Black&quot; office theme for a pitch black dark mode. \" width=\"650\" height=\"450\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can also select \u201cDark Gray.\u201d This theme uses lighter dark grays, which you might prefer if you find the Black theme too dark.<\/p>\n<p>You can select a different \u201cOffice Background\u201d from here, too. For example, if you\u2019d rather not see a design behind Office\u2019s ribbon bar, click the \u201cOffice Background\u201d box and select \u201cNo Background.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These theme and background settings affect all Microsoft Office applications on your system. To find it, click File &gt; Options. Ensure the \u201cGeneral\u201d category is selected and look for the \u201cPersonalize your copy of Microsoft Office\u201d section. Click the \u201cOffice Theme\u201d box and choose your desired theme. Click \u201cOK\u201d to save your changes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-845003 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/5-1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Open up Word Options, go to the &quot;General&quot; tab, and select &quot;Black&quot; next to &quot;Office Theme.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"398\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Documents you create will have a background matching your theme by default. For example, with the dark theme, Office will show white text on a dark background. To stop this from happening, check \u201cNever change the document page color\u201d in the Word Options window.<\/p>\n<p>This setting is just visual. If you send a Word document created in dark mode to someone else, they\u2019d only see a black background with white text if they open it in dark mode. You can\u2019t enable dark mode separately for only Office apps while using your Mac in light mode.<\/p>\n<p>To <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/699672\/how-to-turn-on-dark-mode-on-mac\/\">activate your Mac\u2019s system-wide dark mode, use the toggle in your Mac\u2019s Control Center or head to System Preferences &gt; General and choose the \u201cDark\u201d appearance. Office apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for Mac will immediately enter dark mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-845010\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/dark-mode-option-for-office-on-mac.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Enable Dark Mode in System Preferences on Mac\" width=\"650\" height=\"292\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You can choose not to use Dark Mode for individual Office apps if it\u2019s enabled system-wide. For example, to disable Dark Mode for Word, head to Word &gt; Preferences and select \u201cTurn Off Dark Mode\u201d under Personalize. You\u2019ll have to repeat this step for each app separately. For example, to change this for Excel, head to Excel &gt; Preferences.<\/p>\n<p>In Microsoft Word\u2019s preferences, you can also choose whether your Word documents will have a visually dark background color while you\u2019re working on them.
