Dubbed \u201cbossware,\u201d the agency specifically cited software that randomly screenshots employees\u2019 laptop screens, records their faces and voices, tracks their location, and monitors their texts and calls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClose, constant surveillance and management through electronic means threaten employees\u2019 basic ability to exercise their rights,\u201d Jennifer Abruzzo, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> council of the labor board, wrote in a Monday memo.<\/p>\n<p>Abruzzo added that such surveillance is illegal and violates employees\u2019 rights under the National Labor Relations Act.<\/p>\n<p>The use of technology to closely monitor employees during the work-day spiked during the pandemic and through the work-from-home revolution, with 60% of large employers now using the tech in some form, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>week.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"a boss looking at a computer screen\" class=\"wp-image-24486661\" width=\"618\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1233 1236w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=925 927w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=618 618w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=308 309w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/workplace_spying.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\"\/><figcaption>Bossware has also become a go-to tool for union busting.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In October, the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, Robert Scott, asked the Biden administration to investigate employers\u2019 use of bossware for at-home workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmployers are embracing technology because technology helps them run a more efficient business \u2013 What comes with that is monitoring a lot of things that employers have no business doing,\u201d Mark Gaston Pearce, executive director of the Workers\u2019 Rights Institute at Georgetown Law School, told CBS.<\/p>\n<p>Pearce highlighted to CBS that spying on employees is already illegal, especially if it is for the purpose of stunting unionization.<\/p>\n<p>The labor board\u2019s memo is a clarification of that, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Newsweek reported that Google automatically alerts managers to any meeting with more than 100 employees, while Amazon\u2019s Whole Foods has used heat maps to track specific stores likely to unionize.<\/p>\n<p>Despite bursting into the spotlight since 2020, companies\u2019 use of technology to monitor employees isn\u2019t new.
