Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion service and lose their blue checkmarks.<\/p>\n<p>Experts said\u00a0verified users\u00a0potentially\u00a0losing those markers\u00a0simply because they do not wish to pay for the service\u00a0could make it harder to\u00a0confirm\u00a0whose accounts are\u00a0legitimate\u00a0and\u00a0whose\u00a0aren\u2019t.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe checkmark was really established to provide verification for the sake of the credibility of the platform,\u201d said Karen North, a clinical professor at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.<\/p>\n<p>North said she can foresee situations where legitimate users who are unwilling to pay are competing with fake accounts impersonating them to try to prove their authenticity to the public.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt undermines the primary purpose of the platform if users, especially people like journalists, have trouble figuring out who\u2019s a legitimate source,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe verification that you see allows you to judge the credibility of the sources,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk,\u00a0who took over Twitter last week, said he is planning to charge users $8 per month\u00a0to be\u00a0verified and access other premium\u00a0features\u00a0through the company\u2019s Twitter Blue subscription service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0subscription\u00a0fee was reportedly set at $20 per month\u00a0initially, but Musk\u00a0appeared to decrease\u00a0the price after\u00a0his purported plan\u00a0sparked backlash from users, including prominent figures like author Stephen King and actress Lynda Carter.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201c$20 a month to keep my blue check? F\u2014 that, they should pay me. If that gets instituted, I\u2019m gone like Enron,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StephenKing\/status\/1587042605627490304?s=20&amp;t=agWAVhLTIrs0hbk-7TTTHQ\">King tweeted on Monday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Musk was quick to defend his plan,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1587312517679878144?s=20&amp;t=DvS5DbmTAcEf8ZpvEpz0SA\">tweeting<\/a>\u00a0that bills need to be paid and that the platform cannot entirely depend on advertisers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Grygiel, an associate professor at Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications, said that although she understands Musk is trying to raise revenue for the platform and monetize the value of the blue checkmark, it\u2019s unclear whether the plan will have a positive impact on\u00a0Twitter\u2019s\u00a0users.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>She noted that while not every user needs to be authenticated, prominent figures like public officials should\u00a0be, as they often have important information to convey to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s crucial so why would you want to remove that checkmark,\u201d Grygiel said, adding that\u00a0Musk is\u00a0\u201casking a lot from them to have to pay\u201d to be verified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North said she was surprised that Musk, who has been vocal about\u00a0fixing Twitter\u2019s fake and spam account\u00a0issue, is now putting legitimate users in a situation where they would have to pay to be verified\u00a0or else lose\u00a0that visible marker of their legitimacy.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt seems to me that it\u2019s Elon Musk working against Elon Musk\u2019s own goal,\u201d she said.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0foresees an exodus\u00a0from the platform, especially\u00a0by\u00a0prominent figures, but\u00a0said she\u00a0doesn\u2019t know\u00a0how extensive it will be.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0noted\u00a0some users are planning to leave Twitter\u00a0because\u00a0they are unsure of how Musk plans to lead the site. She also said some people equate\u00a0the new owner\u00a0with allowing hate speech on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Critics have warned for months that Musk\u2019s stated plans to loosen content moderation on Twitter to promote his vision of \u201cfree speech\u201d could increase the spread of misinformation and hate speech.\u00a0After he officially took ownership of the company last week,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/10\/28\/musk-twitter-racist-posts\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0reported that racist and antisemitic tweets began to spread rapidly on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Several celebrities said they were planning on leaving Twitter following Musk\u2019s takeover.<\/p>\n<p>Television producer Shonda Rhimes, for instance,\u00a0publicly bid\u00a0goodbye to the platform,\u00a0though her account\u00a0still\u00a0appears to be active.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot hanging around for whatever Elon has planned. Bye,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/shondarhimes\/status\/1586399694896390147\">Rhymes tweeted<\/a>\u00a0on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Singer Toni Braxton said she was \u201cshocked and appalled\u201d by \u201csome of the \u2018free speech\u2019 I\u2019ve seen on this platform since its acquisition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHate speech under the veil of \u2018free speech\u2019 is unacceptable,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tonibraxton\/status\/1586164534636486656?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1586164534636486656%7Ctwgr%5E0c90feb11b89e62d344e6b0df18f31eef9102caa%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fthehill.com%2Fblogs%2Fin-the-know%2F3714045-celebs-eye-twitter-exit-after-musk-takeover%2F\">Braxton tweeted<\/a>, adding that she would stay off the platform as it is \u201cno longer a safe space\u201d for herself, her sons and other people of color.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>As far as misinformation goes, Grygiel says that ascertaining the trustworthiness of an individual goes beyond whether or not their account is verified on Twitter.\u00a0She explained that there have been many instances\u00a0in which\u00a0public and influential figures have spread misinformation and disinformation on the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Grygiel said these figures should still be scrutinized and fact-checked by journalists, and\u00a0what they say should\u00a0not\u00a0be\u00a0taken\u00a0at face value just because they are verified.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVerification involves a lot more than proving that you aren\u2019t a bot or that your account matches your government I.D.,\u201d Grygiel said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVerification involves context and continual fact-checking and that process rests with journalists, not Musk,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>However, North disagreed with that viewpoint, saying that the issue is not whether what a verified individual said was accurate, but rather whether the person indeed said it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important part of verification is \u2018did that person say it or did somebody pretending to be that person say it?\u201d\u2019 North said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe value of the checkmark isn\u2019t vetting what they say, it\u2019s vetting who they are,\u201d she added.\u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
