Everyone, gun on set!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It\u2019s April, 2022 and we\u2019re in MMC Studios in Cologne for the shooting of European conspiracy thriller <em>Operation Napoleon<\/em>. It\u2019s 5,000 miles and six months distant from the events of Oct. 2021 on the New Mexico set of <em>Rust<\/em>, when Alec Baldwin, discharged a live round from a revolver used as a prop gun killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But the warning still chills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Not that anyone here seems bothered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Director \u00d3skar \u00de\u00f3r Axelsson is too busy setting up what will be the climax of <em>Operation Napoleon<\/em>: as a team of investigators prepare to board an old German World War II plane that has recently emerged from one of Iceland\u2019s largest glaciers. The plane is at the center of the film, and the best-selling novel it\u2019s based on, by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indri\u00f0ason. Grainy satellite footage of the German bomber, which crashed into the ice in 1945, reveals that both German and American officers are among the dead on board. But both Rust and Operation Napoleon can be seen two attempts to solve one of the biggest challenges in indie filmmaking at the moment: how do you make an action movie on a budget that can sell to the international market? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    As production costs rise \u2014inflation, COVID protocols, and salary demands from booked-solid talent and crew are swelling indie film budgets worldwide\u2014it\u2019s becoming increasingly difficult for companies to balance the demands of buyers, who want films that look and feel studio-sized, with the financial realities of an independent market where revenues, particularly theatrical, continue to fall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Rust<\/em> shot in New Mexico to take advantage of state tax credits and used complex financing models to attract investors. Following the shooting incident, there have been allegations that the producers ignored industry-wide norms and cut corners of safety to stretch the film\u2019s shoestring budget. To finance the $7 million feature, the film\u2019s co-producers, Iceland\u2019s Sagafilm \u2014producers of 2021 drama Wolka and hit Icelandic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TV series<\/a> Stella Bl\u00f3mkvist and The Minister\u2014and German indie Splendid Film, picked up shooting subsidies from regional funds in Iceland, Scandinavia and Germany and secured pre-sale deals with Sam Films in Iceland and with German public broadcaster ZDF, for local free-TV rights. Splendid will release the film themselves in Germany early next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Exteriors where all shot on location in Iceland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWe were right on the Langj\u00f6kull glacier, which was\u2026quite something,\u201d notes Glen, with typical British understatement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    For the interiors, Sagafilm and Splendid came to MMC in Cologne and the studios\u2019 production arm, MMC Fiction, came on board as a co-producer. Beta Film, who control 25 percent of Sagafilm, are selling the project worldwide at AFM.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cWith our set up here, we can handle any budget film up to $25 million,\u201d says MMC Studios CEO Jens Wolf. Citing local tax credits and other regional benefits, he notes that MMC \u201ccan produce the same quality as in the US much more cheaply.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    And, though Wolf is too polite to mention it, much more safely than is often the case in by-the-seat-of-your-pants operations in the US.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Mid-budget genre films, of the sort in high demand at the AFM, are particularly suited to the MMC model. XYZ Films, together with Cologne production house Augenschein, used a similar financing structure to bankroll Joe Penna\u2019s sci-fi feature <em>Stowaway<\/em>, starring Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim,\u00a0Toni Collette and Shamier Anderson, which shot at MMC in 2021, and was released on Netflix. Another example is Patrick Vollrath\u2019s skyjacking thriller <em>7500<\/em>, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which Augenschein and FilmNation produced and which went out on Amazon stateside; or Yuval Adler\u2019s spy thriller <em>The Operative <\/em>starring Diane Kruger and Martin Freeman, produced by Black Bear Pictures, among others, together with Cologne\u2019s Little Shark Entertainment, and which Vertical Entertainment released in the U.S..\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:100%; max-width:3000px;\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((2003\/3000)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Stowaway_01838r_f_rgb-1619101553.jpg?w=3000\" alt=\"Stowaway Film - Netflix\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Stowaway_01838r_f_rgb-1619101553.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Stowaway_01838r_f_rgb-1619101553.jpg?resize=1500,1002 1500w\" data-lazy-sizes=\"(min-width: 87.5rem) 1000px, (min-width: 78.75rem) 681px, (min-width: 48rem) 450px, (max-width: 48rem) 250px\" height=\"2003\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\"><span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\"> From left: Toni Collette, Daniel Dae Kim and Anna Kendrick in <em>Stowaway<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                    <cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">JURGEN OLCZYK\/\u00a9 2021, Stowaway Productions, LLC, Augenschein Filmproduktion GmbH, RISE Filmproduktion GmbH.<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    US and international producers are also finding a new crop of eager collaborators in the form of\u00a0European distributors like Splendid, who, seeing major market titles snatched up early in worldwide streaming deals, are increasingly expanding into production as a means of securing films for their release slates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cFor us, <em>Operation Napoleon<\/em>, based on a book that was a bestseller in Germany, with an international star like\u00a0 Iain Glen and a big German name in Wotan [Wilke M\u00f6hring], is a major theatrical release [in Germany]\u201d notes Splendid CEO Dirk Schweitzer. \u201cAnd as a producer, we participate in the international revenues, whether it\u2019s theatrical or VOD or whatever in each territory.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The nearly insatiable appetite of streaming platforms for easy-to-market genre fare featuring recognisable talent means projects like <em>Operation Napoleon <\/em>have a bright future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIn a way, the dynamic online resembles the old straight-to-video market,\u201d says Schweitzer. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing a real boom in demand for the kind of action and genre movies we\u2019ve always specialised in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    But mid-budget action is a tough sell theatrically, with the cost of P&amp;A often restrictively expensive.\u00a0 With shooting costs climbing and online revenues still well below what action titles earned in the heyday of the video market in the 1980s and 90s, clever financing, combined with safe and dependable production, is the key to making the numbers work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Operation Napoleon<\/em>, at least, has come off without a hitch.
