No political party has ever singlehandedly won a majority in Israel\u2019s multiparty parliamentary system, so political parties must come together in a coalition to govern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Netanyahu is the longest-serving prime minister in Israel\u2019s history, having served from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 until 2021. (Associated Press)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu has been fighting charges of corruption since 2019, when he became the first sitting premier to be indicted. He is facing charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s Cabinet will be filled with the top leaders of the political parties in his coalition, and those officials could back legislation that would grant Netanyahu immunity from prosecution as sitting prime minister.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Netanyahu would just need a simple majority of the Knesset to vote in favor of the legislation to shield him from the charges.<\/p>\n<p>He is accused in one case of accepting gifts from two businessmen in exchange for policy favors. (Associated Press)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A far-right party is expected to be a key part of Netanyahu\u2019s coalition and play a major role in governing decisions. Itamar Ben-Gvir\u2019s party, Otzma Yehudit, is projected to win about 15 seats in the Knesset based on exit polls, the best ever showing for the party in an election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Ben-Gvir reportedly said he would <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-721004\">request<\/a> being appointed the interior minister in a ruling coalition, which would make him responsible for Israel\u2019s police and prison service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Jerusalem Post reported that he said his priorities would include changing the rules of engagement for police and soldiers, reducing terrorists\u2019 rights in jails and allowing anyone with basic combat training to carry a weapon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Post published an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/politics-and-diplomacy\/article-719982\">editorial<\/a> against Ben-Gvir\u2019s inclusion in a coalition government, citing his past remarks advocating for the creation of a \u201cMinistry to Encourage Migration\u201d to convince Palestinian Arabs to leave Israel, and calling for Israelis to shoot Palestinians who throw stones at them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has called for deporting Arab lawmakers, imposing a death penalty for convicted terrorists and granting the Israeli security forces greater legal protections when fighting Palestinian militants, The Associated Press reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Otzma Yehudit\u2019s success in the election will likely grant it considerable leverage in Netanyahu\u2019s coalition. (Getty) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Biden and Netanyahu appeared to achieve a cold peace at the start of the new administration, overcoming years of acrimony between Democrats and the Israeli leader. <\/p>\n<p>Past disagreements range from Netanyahu\u2019s opposition to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran; his pursuit of Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank, acrimony towards American\u00a0efforts to mediate with the Palestinians during the Obama administration, and embracing of Republicans and policies of the former Trump administration. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUS-Israel relations will remain close but are likely to be bumpier, especially if Bibi tries to put his thumb on the scale of US politics in support of Republicans as he has in the past,\u201d Barbara Slavin, director of the Future of Iran Initiative at the Atlantic Council, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden achieved key clout with Netanyahu in May 2021, helping achieve a ceasefire to end 11-days of war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza S<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>, with the president\u2019s messaging \u2014 holding back overt criticism of Israeli actions \u2014 credited as smoothing the relationship between Washington and Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu also welcomed closer coordination with the U.S. even as Biden sought to revive the JCPOA. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Biden and Netanyahu could clash if Ben-Gvir and his political partner, Bezalel Smotrich, are given high-profile portfolios in the government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two U.S. officials <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/11\/02\/israel-elections-ben-gvir-netanyahu-biden-administration\">told<\/a> Axios that the Biden administration could refuse to work with the far-right politicians.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Such a move is not without precedent. Netanyahu <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-israel-palestinians-usa\/israel-bars-u-s-democratic-lawmakers-ilhan-omar-and-rashida-tlaib-under-pressure-from-trump-idUSKCN1V50SF\">refused<\/a> to allow two Democratic members of Congress, Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), from entering Israel, citing an Israeli law that blocks entrance for people who support boycotting the Jewish State. (Associated Press)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, it remains unclear how Netanyahu\u2019s comeback will impact its role in the Russia-Ukraine war. <\/p>\n<p>Netanyahu is viewed as having a close working relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, having established the close military communication that allows Israel to operate in the Russian-controlled airspace above Syria to take out what it views as Iranian threats. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring his long previous stint as prime minister, Netanyahu frequently met Putin in person and talked with him on the phone.\u00a0Russian-Israeli relations were basically good, despite Moscow\u2019s close ties with Tehran,\u201d said Mark Katz, nonresident senior fellow with the Atlantic Council\u2019s Middle East Programs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> consensus among Israel\u2019s political and military leaders that strategic ties with Moscow are in Israel\u2019s national security interest.
