The cuts will affect roughly half of Twitter&#8217;s workforce, according to The Times, which cited an investor and internal messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday. We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company\u2019s success moving forward,\u201d the email stated, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/briefings\/twitter-employees-to-learn-of-layoffs-friday-morning?rc=ghhg94\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to The Information\" class=\"link \">according to The Information<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as Musk attempts to improve Twitter\u2019s consistently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/23041717\/twitter-musk-business-plan-peter-kafka-column\" data-ylk=\"slk:unimpressive\" class=\"link \">unimpressive<\/a> margins following his $44 billion acquisition of the firm. Musk, who says he overpaid for Twitter, has already made significant changes to the business that he first attempted to wriggle out of buying. Shortly after taking over, Musk fired Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, CFO Ned Segal, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> counsel Sean Edgett, and legal policy head Vijaya Gadde.<\/p>\n<p>The executives were reportedly fired for cause, though Musk hasn\u2019t publicly accused the executives of any wrongdoing. According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-fired-twitter-execs-for-cause-avoid-severance-report-2022-10?op=1\" data-ylk=\"slk:Business Insider\" class=\"link \">Business Insider<\/a>, the Tesla CEO hopes to avoid making the executives\u2019 contractually binding golden parachute payments that would cost the company tens of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The mercurial billionaire has few choices but to turn Twitter\u2019s fortunes around if he wants to pay off its $13 billion in debt, which is estimated to cost <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately $1 billion a year.<\/p>\n<p>In its last quarter as a public company, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/s22.q4cdn.com\/826641620\/files\/doc_financials\/2022\/q2\/Final_Q2'22_Earnings_Release.pdf\" data-ylk=\"slk:Twitter reported\" class=\"link \">Twitter reported<\/a> a revenue decline of 1% year-over-year to $1.18 billion. The social media company also reported a net loss of $270 million representing a 23% net margin decrease. Costs and expenses, meanwhile, totaled $1.52 billion, a 31% year-over-year jump.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to slashing Twitter\u2019s workforce, Musk is hoping to increase margins by charging users for the blue check marks that signified the service has verified their identity. Initially, the new Twitter chief considered charging users $20 a month for the mark.<\/p>\n<p>But after pushback from users, and famed author Stephen King, Musk lowered the price to $8 per month. Microsoft founder Bill Gates famously considered charging users a fee if their emails were rejected as spam. That plan, however, never came to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>Musk has already kick-started plans to address Twitter\u2019s vexing content moderation policies by empaneling a moderation council composed of people who he says hold a variety of viewpoints, and by talking with civil rights leaders.
