expand the number of clients eligible to choose how to vote at company annual meetings on everything from executive pay to climate strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cVoting Choice\u201d program announced last year by the $8 trillion asset manager could reshape corporate elections both by making shareholders more involved and by diminishing the\u00a0political criticism\u00a0BlackRock\u00a0faces from  liberals and conservatives alike.<\/p>\n<p>BlackRock\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blackrock.com\/corporate\/about-us\/investment-stewardship\/blackrock-voting-choice\">said in a statement<\/a> that at the end of September clients with around $1.8 trillion in equity index assets managed by the company were eligible for voting choices and that clients with $452 billion were doing so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy hope is that in the future, every investor \u2014 ultimately including individual investors \u2014 has access to voting choice, if they want it,\u201d Chief Executive Larry Fink said in a letter to clients and company chief executives seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" wrote.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Other big fund firms have also experimented with\u00a0making\u00a0shareholders more involved with voting. Last month for instance Charles Schwab\u2019s\u00a0asset-management arm\u00a0said\u00a0it would start <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.aboutschwab.com\/press-releases\/press-release\/2022\/Schwab-Asset-Management-Pilots-New-Proxy-Polling-Solution-to-Gain-Insight-Into-Shareholder-Preferences\/default.aspx\">polling shareholders of certain funds about their voting preferences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0Wednesday,\u00a0BlackRock\u00a0rival Vanguard Group\u00a0also\u00a0said it will seek client feedback and explore how investors in several equity index funds could vote directly. \u201cOur clients have diverse perspectives, and a growing number would like the option to weigh in on how their index funds vote,\u201d Vanguard said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in\u00a0BlackRock\u2019s program\u00a0can control how their shares are voted at corporate annual meetings, align their shares with an outside advisor\u2019s voting recommendations\u00a0or\u00a0leave the choice with\u00a0BlackRock\u2019s own stewardship team.<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, clients would be able to choose to follow advice from proxy advisor Glass Lewis as well as Institutional Shareholder Services,\u00a0BlackRock\u00a0said in an update on the program.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0BlackRock\u00a0said it would offer voting choice to more investment strategies and work with investor communications platform Proxymity to extend choice to retail investors in some\u00a0British\u00a0mutual funds.
