\n CrossFit CEO Greg Glassman announced on Tuesday that he is stepping down following outrage over his inflammatory statements about the death of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

Glassman\u2019s statement saying that he intends to retire came shortly after BuzzFeed News<\/a> published an article detailing a Zoom call in which Glassman told gym owners and staffers that \u201cWe\u2019re not mourning\u201d Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

The call was held on Saturday, hours before Glassman fired off an insensitive tweet about Floyd, sparking a quick backlash, with critics accusing Glassman of racism and saying he made light of Floyd\u2019s police-involved death.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn Saturday I created a rift in the CrossFit community and unintentionally hurt many of its members,\u201d Glassman said in a statement announcing his retirement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot let my behavior stand in the way of HQ\u2019s or affiliates\u2019 missions. They are too important to jeopardize.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the 75-minute call, obtained by Buzzfeed News, a CrossFit affiliate owner in Minneapolis questioned Glassman about why the brand hadn\u2019t posted a statement regarding the anti-police brutality protests sparked by Floyd\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you tell me why I should mourn for him? Other than that it\u2019s the white thing to do \u2014 other than that, give me another reason,\u201d Glassman responded, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not mourning for George Floyd \u2014 I don\u2019t think me or any of my staff are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

During the call, with 16 affiliates and staff members, Glassman questioned whether systemic racism existed and interrogated the motives of protesters around the country, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt very much that they\u2019re mourning for Floyd,\u201d Glassman reportedly said.<\/p>\n

He also app<\/a>arently floated baseless conspiracy theories about Floyd\u2019s death \u2014 and about the coronavirus, trashing epidemiology as \u201ca social<\/a> science<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chinese let this virus get out of the laboratory, and that indeed did happen,\u201d he reportedly said, despite US intelligence officials saying they had not concluded the virus emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.<\/p>\n

Glassman also said upstate New Yorkers should secede from the rest of the state due to the Big Apple\u2019s strict lockdown measures \u2014 and urged gym owners to only pretend to comply with health mandates when they reopen.<\/p>\n

Hours after the call,\u00a0 Glassman responded \u201cIt\u2019s FLOYD-19\u2033 to a tweet from the University of Washington\u2019s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation calling racism and discrimination \u201ccritical public health issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tweet sparked a furor that included Reebook announcing it would end its partnership with CrossFit HQ, and some of the company\u2019s 15,000 affiliates said they were cutting ties.<\/p>\n

CrossFit apologized on Sunday, calling Glassman\u2019s words \u201cnot racist but a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFloyd is a hero in the black community and not just a victim,\u201d Glassman said in a statement. \u201cI should have been sensitive to that and wasn\u2019t. I apologize for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Glassman and CrossFit reps did not respond to Buzzfeed\u2019s requests for comment about the call.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
