United Nations climate summit that starts Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Held in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt, the summit is expected to draw world leaders including President Biden, new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, along with representatives of scores of other countries.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Experts say it comes at a critical time in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four key issues to watch at COP27:\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_the_global_energy_crisis_eclipse_other_problems\"><\/span><strong>Will the global energy crisis eclipse other problems?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A combination of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, inflation and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> pandemic recovery have sent global energy markets into a tailspin, potentially overshadowing efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Europe and the U.S. have sought to reduce their reliance on Russian fuels in the wake of the invasion. But Russia was a major supplier of Europe\u2019s natural gas, meaning some countries have had to take drastic measures in order to ensure that their constituents can keep the lights on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany, for example, over the summer\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jul\/08\/germany-reactivate-coal-power-plants-russia-curbs-gas-flow\">reactivated previously out-of-commission coal plants<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Other nations, such as the U.S., have sought to ramp up their natural gas exports to help European allies, even if that means more planet-warming fossil fuels. The U.S. has also called on oil producers to drill more in the wake of high gasoline prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On the other hand, countries that have struggled to replace Russian fuel have also looked to clean energy. Earlier this year, the European Union said it would try to cut its reliance on Russian gas by two-third and that it would pursue more rooftop solar, energy-efficient heat pumps and faster <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rovals for renewable energy projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recent report from the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/world-energy-outlook-2022-shows-the-global-energy-crisis-can-be-a-historic-turning-point-towards-a-cleaner-and-more-secure-future\">International Energy Agency\u00a0found<\/a> that the Ukrainian invasion caused some structural changes that may accelerate the transition to carbon-free energy sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Hultman, who formerly worked on international climate issues for the Biden administration, also pointed to the potential for green energy technologies to help with energy security challenges.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThinking about that is possible because it\u2019s not only utilizing the conventional, old technologies that were built previously and maybe could be relied on as a little bit of a temporary bridge, but also the fact that we have good, new clean technologies that we can begin to deploy,\u201d said Hultman, who now directs the University of Maryland\u2019s Center for Global Sustainability, specifically discussing Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Asked about places such as the U.S., where Biden recently called on corporations to pump more oil, a major contributor to climate change, Hultman said the country needs to be able to \u201cwalk and chew gum at the same time\u201d \u2014 that is, have both short-term solutions to problems and also medium- and long-term climate policies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_wealthy_countries_agree_to_pay_climate_reparations\"><\/span><strong>Will wealthy countries agree to pay climate reparations?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Wealthy nations are major donors to developing nations, including in areas such as resilience to climate change.\u00a0But many developing nations argue that richer ones have already used more than their fair share of fossil fuels in order to reach where they are today.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And, they say, rich countries have caused significant harm to developing countries through their use of the\u00a0planet-warming fuels. They want compensation for the \u201closs and damage\u201d that they have suffered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Madeleine Diouf Sarr, chair of the U.N.\u2019s Least Developed Countries group,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-business-united-nations-kenya-climate-and-environment-11361ed021606d6d84f8b3b29286af3f\">told The Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0that it would like to see \u201can agreement to establish a dedicated financial facility\u201d that pays countries that are already experiencing the worst climate impacts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In years past, many rich nations have resisted that idea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, U.S. special climate envoy John Kerry recently told reporters that Washington supports a\u00a0loss and damage dialogue, though he rejected the term \u201creparations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have always said that it is imperative for the developed world to help the developing world to deal with the impacts of climate,\u201d Kerry said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very supportive of addressing loss and damage in the context of the \u2026 COPs,\u201d he added, referring to the global climate conferences.<\/p>\n<p>But while the issue may be discussed, some are skeptical that a specific financing mechanism will get set up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy view is the landing zone will be around agreeing an agenda item, but I don\u2019t think that the conditions are there yet to actually agree to have a new finance facility,\u201d Kaveh Guilanpour, vice president for international strategies at the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, recently told reporters. \u201cImportant questions haven\u2019t been answered, such as \u2018What value add would such a facility have over existing facilities?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Will_China_cooperate_despite_tensions_with_the_US\"><\/span><strong>Will China cooperate despite tensions with the U.S.?\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At last year\u2019s global climate summit, the U.S. and China \u2014 the world\u2019s largest emitters of greenhouse gases \u2014\u00a0agreed to cooperate\u00a0on climate change issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But since then, relations between the two have soured. After Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) became the highest-ranking U.S. official in decades to visit Taiwan, China said that it would\u00a0halt its climate cooperation with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear what this means for Beijing\u2019s climate commitments. Previously, China had said it would\u00a0peak its climate-warming emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.<\/p>\n<p>But some say it needs to be even more ambitious, as other world powers are aiming to decrease their emissions between now and 2030.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kerry said during a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) event that he and his Chinese counterpart have \u201csent each other a few messages about trying to figure out how we might be able to resume,\u201d but that they currently are not resuming talks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>He added that China should work to put forward strong climate action because it\u2019s not just an issue between it and the U.S. \u2014 planetary warming is expected to have disastrous impacts across the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key is that this is not a bilateral issue and that we need to get back to the table because the world depends on it,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_will_climate_promises_be_implemented\"><\/span><strong>How will climate promises be implemented?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After several nations upped their climate change ambitions at last year\u2019s COP26 in Scotland, this year may focus more on making those promises into reality.<\/p>\n<p>Studies and other analyses have shown that while many\u00a0countries\u00a0and\u00a0companies\u00a0have made promises to cut their emissions, few have the actual policies in place to achieve them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis year has to be implementation-plus. The test this year is: Will countries put commitment into action?\u201d Kerry asked at the CFR event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hultman said that while countries have made various commitments, the conference provides a chance for each of them to assess and talk about how those promises will be met.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a very good and important question \u2026 of \u2014 it\u2019s one thing to just make a goal. It\u2019s another thing to deliver on the goal. \u2026 Both of these then become fair <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> to talk about at these international meetings,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said that in addition to implementation of individual country goals, the world may also want to get a better idea of collective goals \u2014 such as the global methane pledge, which seeks to cut worldwide emissions of the planet-warming gas by 30 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Countries supporting that goal, he added, have to \u201cput some actual policies or strategies in place that countries or subnational entities \u2026 will be doing to actually understand better, improve inventories, reduce emissions and what-have-you to enable that 30 percent collective goal to be reached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corporations, too, may take the opportunity to outline how they will meet their ambitions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do think that we are going to see more information on what exactly companies are doing to hit those goals, what their timelines are for those goals, and I would expect \u2026 that we would see certain things disappear from how those goals are stated and reiterated,\u201d said Ken Markowitz, who advises companies on climate and environmental issues with the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer &amp; Feld.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many activists have so far been critical of corporate climate pledges, accusing companies of \u201cgreenwashing\u201d to make their records appear cleaner than they actually are.\u00a0\n<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
