Some programs, like the Sundance Institute Film Scoring Program, have shut down, while others have managed to launch and survive during the pandemic. The Film Scoring Academy of Europe makes its debut on this list, and another new program, at Brooklyn College\/CUNY\u2019s Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, offers a master of fine arts degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> scoring. The past year also has upended <em>THR<\/em>\u2018s top rankings a bit as ascendant Columbia College Chicago moves into the top spot, overtaking perennial leaders USC Los Angeles Thornton School of Music and The Juilliard School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    To achieve the rankings this year, <em>THR<\/em> reached out to insiders in the film and television music community and polled members of Hollywood\u2019s Society of Composers and Lyricists, the Composers Diversity Collective, the Alliance of Women Film Composers and the music branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s and the Television Academy.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"heading larva \/\/   lrv-a-font-accent-l   \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Columbia_College\"><\/span>1. Columbia College <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Chicago<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Columbia has been trending steadily upward on <em>THR<\/em>\u2018s survey for the past few years and in 2022 finally hits the top of the list. The Illinois-based school offers a two-year master of fine arts program in music composition for the screen, headed by Kubilay Uner, focusing on film, television, advertising, video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and other interactive media. Students attend a five-week semester in Los Angeles, interning with professional composers and employing professional musicians and engineers in studio recording and mixing sessions. Says Uner: \u201cThe goal of this program is for everything that we do to enable and facilitate the direct employment of our graduates in media music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Some of the program\u2019s graduates include DeAndre James Allen-Toole (<em>God\u2019s Country<\/em>, starring Thandiwe Newton); Jesi Nelson, who wrote the music for <em>Star Wars Biomes<\/em> as the first female and first person of color to serve as a composer on a <em>Star Wars <\/em>property; and Batu Sener, who wrote the music for <em>The<\/em> <em>Ice Age<\/em> <em>Adventures of Buck Wild<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    One seasoned Hollywood composer impressed by Columbia College alumni and by Uner himself is Harry Gregson-Williams (<em>House of Gucci<\/em>, <em>The Last Duel<\/em>), who first met Uner at the Sundance composer lab. \u201cHe\u2019s so passionate, and he\u2019s a very accomplished composer himself,\u201d Gregson-Williams says. \u201cI was supposed to be mentoring him, and I could tell that he was hugely talented. Berklee alumni and <em>Stranger Things<\/em> music editor Lena Glikson helped create one of the year\u2019s most talked-about visual music moments when she incorporated Kate Bush\u2019s \u201cRunning Up That Hill\u201d into fourth-season episodes of the Netflix horror <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> and won an Emmy in the process. Cowen and Kirst point out that USC\u2019s faculty and student body has grown substantially more diverse this year, with Sony\/ATV Music Publishing and Bleeding Fingers Music specifically sponsoring African American students each school year. \u201cWe are hoping to change the face of the industry, and I think we have the ability to do so,\u201d Cowen says. \u201cNot only did Sony\/ATV continue their support for the scholarship, but they doubled it. Its Center for Innovation in the Arts originally promoted interdisciplinary work and experimental art projects that incorporated new technology, but under program director Edward Bilous, Juilliard has developed impressive media scoring classes, including composing for visual media, an independent study in emerging and collaborative arts and a scoring-to-picture workshop. \u201cWe kind of got into doing the traditional film scoring route through the back door,\u201d Bilous says. \u201cJuilliard doesn\u2019t have filmmakers. So it\u2019s not like USC or UCLA or NYU or any of these other big universities where they just walk across the hall and there\u2019s a whole film department. So instead, we reached out and developed a partnership with film schools all around the country. The classes are fairly small, so it\u2019s pretty in-depth work. There are typically about eight in the class, and then as they go on, they also do work with me privately. I connect them to filmmakers at UCLA, both live-action and animation.
