This could lead the way to energy-generating windows that power up our homes and devices.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as<span> Gr\u00e4tzel cells, dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs) are a type of low-cost solar cell that use photosensitized dye to convert visible light into electricity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Previous versions of DSCs have been reliant on direct sunlight, but a team of researchers at the \u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL) have found a way to make transparent photosensitizers <\/span><span>that can absorb light across the entire visible light spectrum, including both direct and ambient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The heart of tech is coming to the heart of the Mediterranean<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The researchers <span>developed a way of improving the combination of two newly designed photosensitizer dye molecules. They did this by creating a technique in which a monolayer of a hydroxamic acid derivative is pre-adsorbed onto the surface of nanocrystalline mesoporous titanium dioxide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On top of the new <span>photosensitizers being able to <\/span><span>harvest light across the entire visible domain, the scientists have also increased the DSCs\u2019 photovoltaic performance \u2014 <\/span><span>which has been a weak point of the technology compared to traditional solar cells.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To put that in numbers, the enhanced DSCs\u2019 efficiency reaches<span> above 15% in direct sunlight and up to 30% in ambient light. For reference, commercial solar panels have an average efficiency between <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenmatch.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/11\/how-efficient-are-solar-panels\">15% to 22%<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In other words, if this technology can hit scale, we may soon see a transparent solar panel revolution in Europe.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_are_DSCs_already_being_used\"><\/span>How are DSCs already being used?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>DSCs aren\u2019t a new technology, but the advances from the \u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne could deliver a lifeline to sustainable buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Dye-sensitised solar cells are not <\/span><span>only transparent, but can also be <\/span><span>fabricated in multiple colors and for low cost. While there\u2019s an obvious benefit for installing transparent solar cells on buildings to help meet nations\u2019 net-zero climate goals, the technology\u2019s applicability goes beyond energy-generating windows and glass facades.<\/p>\n<p>DSCs take up far less space than traditional panels, which opens up their use for a wide number of items, whether that\u2019s portable electronic devices (such as earphones and ereaders) or connected sensors that are part of the Internet of Things.<\/p>\n<p>When a scientific advance like this happens, it opens the door for bright minds to create something new and efficient.
