owner Meta has bought <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audioanalytic.com\/about\/index.html\">Audio Analytic<\/a>, a Cambridge-based startup building AI-driven sound recognition software.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2010 by Chris Mitchell, Audio Analytic aims to augment consumer <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> with high-end sound recognition, and has trained its AI to recognize a broad range of sounds, including smoke alarms, dogs barking, windows breaking, or even babies crying.<\/p>\n<p>As per the company\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.audioanalytic.com\/\">website<\/a>, its technology can give machines the \u201cmost accurate, robust, and compact sense of hearing on the planet\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper channel-cta\">\n<div class=\"ica-text\">\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Join_TNW_in_Valencia\"><\/span>Join TNW in Valencia!<span href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/11\/06\/cambridge-start-up-audio-analytic-bought-facebook-owner-meta\/\">the Telegraph reports<\/a>, will join Meta\u2019s Reality Labs division that\u2019s tasked with the development of AR and VR tech. For reference, the company\u2019s Reality Labs division <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/home\/default.aspx\">lost $3.7 billion in the third quarter of 2022<\/a>, which followed a $2.8 billion loss in the second quarter. What\u2019s more, the company\u2019s anticipating further losses in the coming year.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.fb.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2022\/Meta-Reports-Third-Quarter-2022-Results\/default.aspx\">Meta\u2019s Q3 Report<\/a>, \u201cWe do anticipate that Reality Labs operating losses in 2023 will grow significantly year-over-year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Silicon_Valley_continues_munching_down_European_startups\"><\/span>Silicon Valley continues munching down European startups<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time that Meta is t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing into European startups to help it create and dominate the metaverse space.<\/p>\n<p>In the summer of 2022, the tech giant acquired Berlin-based <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/lofelt\/?originalSubdomain=de\">Lofelt<\/a>, which specializes in haptic technology, specifically wearables that can help people experience the virtual world around them. In other words, exactly the type of tech needed to improve our experience of the metaverse.<\/p>\n<p>While in 2020, Meta (then Facebook) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/02\/08\/scapebook\/\">acquired Scape Technologies<\/a>, a company with expertise in mapping for augmented reality.<\/p>\n<p>And as far as Europe-based audio startups go, Audio Analytic isn\u2019t the only one that\u2019s been snatched by Big Tech companies.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbinsights.com\/company\/true-knowledge\">Amazon bought Evi<\/a>, which developed the voice assistant technology that became part of Amazon\u2019s Alexa. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/technology\/apple\/11908743\/Apple-buys-UK-start-up-that-wants-you-to-talk-to-your-gadgets-like-they-are-people.html\">Apple acquired speech recognition company VocalIQ<\/a>, as well as imaging startup <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-acquires-spectral-edge-to-improve-iphone-camera-2019-12?international=true&amp;r=US&amp;IR=T\">Spectral Edge<\/a> to help improve iPhone\u2019s camera.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a long history of American companies acquiring European startups before the latter can properly grow. Obviously some of this is expected \u2014 few of us would turn down millions of euros and the chance to scale \u2014 but it could be worrying that there are so few huge tech players on the continent.<\/p>\n<p>The question then, is whether the EU should be involved in funding outstanding startups to become unicorns, rather than letting them be snapped up by Silicon Valley giants?
