\n A neo-Nazi ex-soldier who wanted to bomb CNN and incite a race war has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison \u2014 after prosecutors described him a self-confessed Satanist hellbent on overthrowing the government.<\/p>\n

US District Judge Daniel Crabtree decried having to follow such \u201clow\u201d sentencing guidelines for Jarrett William Smith, who committed \u201ctroubling and serious\u201d crimes with \u201cmultistep plans to create chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis planned actions, if executed, would have endangered countless members of the public,\u201d Crabtree said at a sentencing hearing Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Smith, 24, was a private first class stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas when he was arrested last year for sharing instructions online detailing how to build a bomb and make napalm.<\/p>\n

Smith planned to start a race war to ultimately overthrow the government as part of his ties to the neo-Nazi group Feuerkrieg Division, prosecutors argued \u2014 with bombing a news<\/a> organization like CNN the first step.<\/p>\n

Smith also discussed assassinating then-Democratic presidential candidate Beto O\u2019Rourke for \u201cfire, destruction and death,\u201d according to court documents.<\/p>\n

The former Army private told an FBI agent he was doing it \u201cfor the glory of his Satanist religion,\u201d prosecutors said, although they gave little detail other than his love of \u201cblack metal\u201d designed to attract people to Satan.<\/p>\n

FBI bomb technicians said the weapon-making recipes he shared online were viable.<\/p>\n

Smith, who was also previously stationed at Fort Bliss in Texas, was discharged from the military after pleading guilty in February to two felony charges of distributing explosives information.<\/p>\n

Smith\u2019s defense team blamed psychological troubles from trauma in high school when he learned he was on a \u201chit list\u201d for a planned school shooting that was ultimately thwarted. He was also bullied for his cleft lip and palate, the court was told.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the defendant experienced is sad, and I have sympathy for him,\u201d Assistant US Attorney Anthony Mattivi told the judge.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it has to be balanced against what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crabtree also ordered three years of supervised probation for the first-time offender after his release from prison.<\/p>\n
