\n Campus beat: Colleges Are Dismantling America<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAcademia was the ideological seedbed\u201d for post-George Floyd violence, contends Heather Mac Donald at City Journal, and it\u2019ll \u201cprove just as critical in the accelerated transformation of the country.\u201d College officials have \u201ccompeted for the most sweeping indictment of the American polity, rooted in the claim that blacks are everywhere\u201d under threat. Yet \u201cwhat if the racism explanation for ongoing disparities is wrong\u201d and \u201cracial economic and incarceration gaps cannot close without addressing personal responsibility and family attitudes,\u201d among other things? \u201cWith the university now explicitly committed to the racism explanation,\u201d there\u2019ll be \u201clittle chance of changing course and addressing the behaviors that lie behind many racial disparities.\u201d Persisting inequality will then produce \u201ca new round of quotas and self-incrimination.\u201d And graduates will \u201cproceed further to dismantle our civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: The Politics of School Reopenings<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many \u201cpublic school districts and teachers\u2019 unions are fighting\u201d to keep their schools closed \u201cin the name of safety,\u201d but new data suggest that they really care more about politics, reports Reason\u2019s Corey A. DeAngelis. According to an Education Week study, districts in \u201cstates with stronger teachers\u2019 unions\u201d are \u201csignificantly less likely to reopen in person this fall.\u201d In fact, those in \u201cstates that require union membership\u201d are 25 percentage points less likely to do so. And an analysis by Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Jon Valant found that\u2019s largely because of \u201cpeople\u2019s political leanings and support for\u201d President Trump: The \u201cless support Trump had in an area, the less likely that school district is to offer in-person learning.\u201d Politics, it seems, and not \u201cthe safety of students, families and teachers,\u201d is the key factor in reopening decisions.<\/p>\n

2020 journal: Elephant in the Convention-Room<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Chicago Tribune\u2019s John Kass advises readers to \u201cpay attention\u201d to what Democrats aren\u2019t mentioning at their convention \u2014 namely, the \u201cgrowing violence\u201d in big US cities. Why not? \u201cUrban violence threatened the peace of targeted Democratic suburban voters,\u201d who make up the key \u201cswing vote.\u201d Meanwhile, \u201cthis new left Democratic Party of 2020 sees only two types: The Oppressed and The Oppressors,\u201d so convention-speakers such as Bernie Sanders instead praised \u201cvirtually open borders, free college\u201d and \u201cthe defunding or \u2018reimagining\u2019 of police.\u201d The convention\u2019s theme<\/a>: \u201cWe the People.\u201d Yet if you \u201cdisagree with the Democrats,\u201d are you still \u201c \u2018the people\u2019 \u201d \u2014 or \u201csome nonhuman\u201d in \u201cthe basket of deplorables\u201d? That, says Kass, is \u201cwhat this election is about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eye on the Economy: The Sunbelt\u2019s Sunny News<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Though the national economy is \u201cstill fragile\u201d because of the COVID shutdowns, \u201csouthern states that were hot spots just a month ago\u201d are showing improvement, cheers Bloomberg Opinion\u2019s Conor Sen. After Arizona reopened its economy in early spring, it saw \u201crapid virus growth,\u201d but cases began falling in mid-July \u2014 and \u201cstopped growing or began falling in other southern states.\u201d Thus Arizona \u201cdining activity is increasing again,\u201d and Texas, Georgia and Florida have seen \u201ca similar uptick.\u201d Meanwhile, air travel<\/a> is up to \u201ca new pandemic-era high.\u201d Because southern states have the virus \u201cmore under control\u201d than a month ago, \u201ceconomic activity in these states appears to be reaccelerating\u201d \u2014 a dynamic that \u201cshould help support the national economy,\u201d whether or not Congress reaches a relief-package deal.<\/p>\n

Conservative: An Unwise Reminder About Terror<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the DNC, Dems brought up the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting \u2014 yet \u201cit\u2019s remarkable,\u201d marvels Jim Geraghty at National Review, \u201chow little reckoning\u201d there\u2019s been about how that \u201cIslamist terror attack was widely re-spun as a reflection of \u2018homegrown homophobia.\u2019 \u201d The trial of the shooter\u2019s wife made clear he \u201cwas not a closeted gay man.\u201d He \u201cliterally pledged his loyalty to ISIS while on the phone with police.\u201d Yet the way the Obama administration and media<\/a> responded to that attack, and others, \u201cprobably contributed\u201d to fear that government and the media weren\u2019t \u201cbeing honest\u201d about the Islamist threat. \u201cThere are many reasons Trump won in 2016, but that sense that Hillary Clinton would continue a willfully blind approach\u201d was \u201calmost certainly one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n
