Speakership bid and other offices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s still not clear which party will control the House, with nearly three-dozen races without a winner. While the GOP is still favored to win the majority, it is expected to be much smaller than once thought, which has given critics of McCarthy an argument to make against him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know if we have the majority or who\u2019s in the majority,\u201d House Freedom Caucus Chair Scott Perry (R-Pa.) told The Hill in an interview on Thursday. \u201cPeople haven\u2019t come to Washington, D.C. because they don\u2019t know if they\u2019ve won their races yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd how can they be expected to vote for a rules package, how we run this place, or leadership if they haven\u2019t met these people, they haven\u2019t heard their pitch?\u201d Perry said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy is working to shore up support for Speaker, and members supporting him maintain confidence he will capture the role.\u00a0Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) suggested that those casting doubt on McCarthy\u2019s chances come down to \u201csaber rattling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s our best strategist. He\u2019s our best fundraiser. He\u2019s our best recruiter. If it weren\u2019t for Kevin\u2019s efforts, we wouldn\u2019t be back in the majority. So I just feel like he\u2019s going to get the gavel,\u201d Reschenthaler said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked in the Capitol on Wednesday whether he has the votes for both the majority and the Speakership, McCarthy said, \u201cYes\u201d \u2013 but did not respond to a follow up asking about the Freedom Caucus.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said that McCarthy does not have the votes yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt takes 218 votes\u2026 And there\u2019s not a soul in this town right now that has 218 votes,\u201d Roy told reporters on Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy doesn\u2019t actually need 218 votes until a public vote on the House floor, when Democrats and Republicans will vote on a new speaker.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House GOP leadership elections scheduled to take place on Tuesday are behind closed doors, and only a majority vote is required to win.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>It is unclear if any Republicans will challenge McCarthy in that backroom vote. Doing so could be a risky proposition, though a narrow majority will also give conservatives even more leverage with their leaders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roy noted that he made a last-minute bid for House GOP Conference Chair against Rep. Elise Setfanik (R-N.Y.) last year to avoid a \u201ccoronation.\u201d He did not go so far as to call for a challenger to McCarthy \u2013 but he also did not rule out throwing hat into the ring for Speaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Election results falling well below expectations have contributed to McCarthy not having the Speakership locked up, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) said in a recent interview.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think that his statement recently that shouldn\u2019t impeach [Homeland Security] Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas indicates maybe we\u2019re not gonna be as aggressive going forward as we should be,\u201d Biggs told reporters on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roy wants to see more substantive details and a plan for investigations and oversight of the House.\u00a0McCarthy and GOP leaders have promised substantive inquiries and hearings ranging from the origins of COVID-19 to alleged politicization at the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly don\u2019t think we should be having elections before we have everything counted and know what our numbers are,\u201d Roy said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ralph Norman (R-C.S.) similarly told reporters that \u201chopefully the leadership elections will be delayed.\u201d McCarthy asked for his support, Norman said, but he declined to commit. He said that he does not know whether McCarthy still has a solid base of support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House Freedom Caucus Chair and McCarthy had yet to connect post-election as of Thursday afternoon. Perry said that he called McCarthy on Wednesday, but was not able to talk to him \u2013 adding that to his knowledge, the GOP leader has not reached out to him either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know when I\u2019m running for office, I go out and see my constituents and the people that I hope to encourage that I\u2019ve earned their vote and I go trying to speak to them. So I stand ready to have a conversation,\u201d Perry said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy\u2019s office did comment for this story.<\/p>\n<p>The Freedom Caucus is hoping to negotiate with GOP leaders about a\u00a0slate of rules change requests\u00a0for the internal House GOP conference and the House as a whole that would empower individual members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we want to make sure of is that every member of Congress is treated fairly and equally,\u201d Perry said. \u201cIncreasingly, over decades, it has been that power \u2013 that voice \u2013 has been concentrated in leadership in both the Senate and the House.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Among the requests is restoring the motion to vacate the chair, a move to force a vote on removing the Speaker. The move was used by former Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) against former GOP Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who resigned from Congress later that year. McCarthy told Punchbowl <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> before the election that he opposed that proposal, saying: \u201cI personally don\u2019t take well to leveraging.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Freedom Caucus members have also moved for the GOP conference to vote on rules before they vote on leaders. A conference motion to do that was\u00a0tabled\u00a0earlier this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Roy said he got news Thursday afternoon that \u201cdoesn\u2019t seem to be where the current leadership wants to go.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are obviously a little distressed\u201d about the election results, Perry said. \u201cWe\u2019re confident we\u2019re going to win the majority.
