If another car was coming, I would\u2019ve been gone in a second. I wouldn\u2019t be talking to you right now,\u201d said Rothstein, whose car was totaled. <\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he felt blessed to come out of the ordeal merely with bruised and cracked ribs from airbag impact. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all obviously have things we take for granted, but I never really appreciated how grateful we should be every day just to be safe and healthy,\u201d Rothstein said. \u201cThere\u2019s so much stuff that we dwell on, especially in this time period in society, that is insignificant. If you\u2019re a goal-oriented person, you should continue to aspire to do more and be the best you can be and go as far as you can go, but I remember going to bars in Manhattan and lamenting opportunities I didn\u2019t get a call on. I told myself I wasn\u2019t appreciating the opportunities that I already had, and that I was wasting time worrying about things I had no control over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving forward, I told myself, I\u2019m going to do a much better job at enjoying my life, because I don\u2019t know \u2014 and nobody knows \u2014 how fortunate we\u2019re going to be to live for as long as we want. Because, it can get taken away in an instant. They could be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> for college basketball such as \u201cThis is March\u201d or \u201cWe sleep in May\u201d or team-specific, such as \u201cWest Virginia Basketball. Tougher than a long weekend at your in-laws.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He credits longtime New York sports journalist Frank Isola with hammering it into his head that media members who didn\u2019t play or coach had to have an angle with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. And he saw from Dick Vitale how much enthusiasm \u2014 and yes, catchphrases \u2014 resonated with fan bases across college hoops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople gravitate to the taglines,\u201d Rothstein said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"no\" height=\"200\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/playlist.megaphone.fm\/?e=NYPH9672839513&amp;light=true\" width=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He enjoys connecting with fans personally. Last season, Rothstein predicted that Northwestern would make the NCAA Tournament. A faction of their own fans pessimistically disagreed. Rothstein vowed to host a happy hour for students should they miss the Big Dance, and dozens showed up after the 15-16 season ended. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019ll continue to do with other fan bases because it\u2019s a great way to engage,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m a big believer in being someone who is affiliated with people who are passionate about the sport \u2014 because I\u2019m someone who didn\u2019t have a lot of connections coming up. I had to earn everything that I\u2019ve gotten.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rothstein has several different jobs. He is a college basketball insider for CBS Sports, where he is a studio analyst on TV, including CBS and Turner\u2019s coverage of the NCAA Tournament the past two years. He also hosts the \u201cCollege Hoops Today\u201d podcast, creates content for FanDuel and writes daily during the season at his own site, collegehoopstoday.com, where he additionally sells t-shirts with some of his expressions. They met at Blondie\u2019s, a bar on the Upper West Side in the fall of 2017 \u2014 about nine months after Rothstein\u2019s harrowing car wreck.<\/p>\n<p>A group of Rothstein\u2019s buddies watches the NFL most Sundays. Because of the rigors of Rothstein\u2019s work schedule, he rarely has a day off between Labor Day and March Madness. However, this was an exception, and he joined his friends for some football. <\/p>\n<p>He wound up sitting at the end of the table \u2014 next to Alana \u2014 and got her number. She passed away, and while her father was caring for her mother, he got really sick and passed away about a year later. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was kind of shook when I heard that, because it\u2019s so sad that someone has to go through that, but it also opened my eyes to understand, much like I did after that car accident, that there are things professionally we should all aspire to. I take pride every day in being as thorough and informed and hardworking as I can, but at the same time, you have to understand \u2014 even if you get where you dream to go, you\u2019re not going to be more complete as a person. The process of becoming what we\u2019re supposed to become is much more rewarding than the moment of getting where we dreamed to go.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rothstein closed the interview with a reference to a film mobster. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a movie guy, and Hyman Roth from \u2018Godfather 2\u2019 was right \u2014 good health is the most important thing. More than success, more than money, more than power,\u201d he said. \u201cSeeing my wife go through that \u2014 really not having her parents as a young professional; she\u2019s the strongest person that I know \u2014 was another sign, after totaling my car, that there\u2019s other things in addition to our quest to achieve whatever we want to achieve professionally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a long, long way to go to achieve what I want professionally. I have a lot more to give to CBS Sports.
