He\u2019s Scott Walker! He\u2019s Satan! But none of these seem right. <\/p>\n<p>Instead \u2014 and hear me out! \u2014 he may well be Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>No, not <em>morally<\/em>. Despite Donald Trump\u2019s grotesque insinuation that there is something \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/08\/us\/politics\/trump-desantis-2024.html\">unflattering<\/a>\u201d about DeSantis that only he knows about, there\u2019s no indication that Florida\u2019s governor is anything other than an upstanding husband and father. <\/p>\n<p>But, in other respects, the parallels are clear. Like Clinton, DeSantis is a young governor from the South entering his political prime against a backdrop of inertia and irritation with the status quo. Like Clinton, DeSantis has been careful to combine the non-negotiable parts of his party\u2019s broader platform with some policy innovations and stylistic habits that have served to set him apart. DeSantis romped to re-election by an astonishing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/11\/08\/us\/elections\/results-florida-governor.html?action=click&amp;pgtype=Article&amp;state=default&amp;module=election-results&amp;context=election_recirc\u00aeion=RaceLink\">twenty points<\/a>, taking all but five of Florida\u2019s 67 counties on his way. Bill Clinton was 46 when he first ran for the White House \u2014 the exact age DeSantis will be come 2024. Both men are from modest, blue-collar backgrounds, and like to cast themselves as champions of ordinary people against corporations and elite institutions. Substitute the names George HW Bush and Dan Quayle into this scenario, and one has a fairly close match with 1992.<\/p>\n<p>And, just as it was for Clinton in 1992, this is Ron DeSantis\u2019 moment. In hindsight, Bill Clinton\u2019s nomination in 1992 seems inevitable, but, at the time, it was anything but. Clinton lost New Hampshire and Iowa, and he seemed dead in the water until a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1992_Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries\">late comeback<\/a> in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida made him the first sitting governor to run against a sitting president <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1948_United_States_presidential_election\">since 1948<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In politics, as in life, nothing comes easy.\u00a0Both DeSantis and Clinton undoubtedly know that, too.<\/p>\n<p><em>Charles C.
