Voters in this system rank the candidates in order from their first preference to their last.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A candidate must win a majority of first-place votes to win outright without the election going to a second round.\u00a0If no one wins a majority, the candidate with the lowest number of first-place votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed to the remaining candidates according to their voters\u2019 second preferences.<\/p>\n<p>The process continues until one candidate wins a majority of the votes. Alaska adopted the ranked-choice system in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Since no one won a majority in Alaska\u2019s\u00a0Senate\u00a0race,\u00a0it\u00a0will\u00a0proceed\u00a0to a second round to\u00a0determine\u00a0the winner. Alaska\u2019s lone House race could wrap up in one round, but\u00a0additional\u00a0rounds might be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s\u00a0where the Alaska House and Senate races stand:<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"ap-embed\" title=\"Live election results via the Associated Press\" src=\"https:\/\/interactives.ap.org\/election-results\/customers\/layouts\/organization-layouts\/published\/102294\/8658.html\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"At-large_House_race\"><\/span><strong>At-large House race<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola (D)\u00a0has\u00a0represented\u00a0Alaska\u2019s only congressional district\u00a0since September after she won a special election to succeed Rep. Don Young (R), who held the seat for almost 50 years before his death in March.<\/p>\n<p>Peltola defeated\u00a0two Republicans,\u00a0former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and\u00a0Nick Begich, the co-chairman of Young\u2019s 2020 reelection campaign,\u00a0to win\u00a0the special election.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Peltola, Palin and Begich, along with Republican Tara Sweeney, advanced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election after receiving the most votes in a nonpartisan blanket primary, in which voters can vote for any candidate regardless of party registration. The primary occurred\u00a0the same day as the special election.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney dropped out of the race soon after the primary, so Libertarian Chris Bye advanced to the general election.<\/p>\n<p>With 80 percent of ballots counted in the general election, Peltola had a clear lead as of Friday with more than 47 percent of the vote, less than 3 points away from clinching the win.\u00a0Palin was in second with 26.6 percent, and Begich was in third with 24.2 percent.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Peltola could be\u00a0in a position\u00a0to win the election in the first round and make additional rounds unnecessary.\u00a0But whether she will prevail in the first round may not be clear until toward the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>Alaska\u2019s Division of Elections website\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/Core\/alaskavotecountingsystems.php\">state<\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/Core\/alaskavotecountingsystems.php\">s\u00a0that\u00a0early votes submitted<\/a> between the Friday before Election Day\u00a0and Election Day will be counted seven days after\u00a0Election Day, meaning this coming Tuesday. Early votes\u00a0submitted\u00a0prior to the Friday before Election Day were counted on election night.<\/p>\n<p>Regional elections offices can start counting absentee ballots seven days after Election Day.\u00a0All absentee ballots must be counted no later than\u00a015 days\u00a0after a general election.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Peltola could become the winner after\u00a0the votes are finished being tabulated, which must h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en by Nov. 23, one day before Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0additional\u00a0rounds are needed, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/Core\/RCV.php\">they will\u00a0happen\u00a0on the 15th\u00a0day after the election<\/a>\u00a0at the elections division director\u2019s office in Juneau.<\/p>\n<p>Peltola will\u00a0likely have\u00a0a large lead at the end of the first round even if she\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0clinch victory, so her opponents would need to receive an overwhelming majority of second-place votes to stay in contention to win the race.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Senate_race\"><\/span><strong>Senate race<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) and Republican Kelly Tshibaka\u00a0are set to face off in the final round\u00a0of the\u00a0Senate\u00a0race\u00a0after no candidate won a majority of the votes in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>Tshibaka had a small lead over Murkowski by about 1.4 percentage points with\u00a080 percent of votes counted.\u00a0As of Friday, Tshibaka won 44.2 percent of the vote and Murkowski won 42.8 percent.<\/p>\n<p>However, Murkowski allies expect the ranked-choice system to ultimately benefit the incumbent and push her to the top in the final round.<\/p>\n<p>Tshibaka, Murkowski, Democrat Pat Chesbro and Republican Buzz Kelley\u00a0advanced to the general election after winning the most votes in the nonpartisan, blanket primary in August. Kelley dropped out of the race in\u00a0September\u00a0and endorsed Tshibaka but remained on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Chesbro had less than 10 percent of the vote, while Kelley won about 3 percent as of Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Tshibaka, who served as the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration from 2019 to 2021, received the endorsement of the\u00a0Alaska\u00a0Republican Party and\u00a0former President Trump. Murkowski has been criticized by her own party and\u00a0the\u00a0former president\u00a0for voting to convict\u00a0Trump\u00a0during his second impeachment trial over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The process for\u00a0determining\u00a0the winner of the Senate race will be the same as for the House race.
