It\u2019s going to have a terrible impact on the market as well as for customers of FTX who probably will be lucky to  get even a small portion of their money back \u2014 and that won\u2019t be for another four or five years at best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried was the second biggest donor to the Democratic party last year. He is the son of two well-connected professors at Stanford University School of Law.<\/p>\n<p>His mother, Barbara Fried, and two Stanford colleagues are the co-founders of \u201cMind the Gap,\u201d which Vox called a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/recode\/2020\/1\/6\/21046631\/mind-the-gap-silicon-valley-democratic-donors-stanford\">\u201csecretive Silicon Valley PAC\u201d<\/a> known for its stealth-style of quickly gathering donations over a short period of time \u201cto prevent Republicans from mobilizing their own donors in response.\u201d She also co-founded\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/a-nonprofit-with-ties-to-democrats-is-sending-out-millions-of-ballot-applications-election-officials-wish-it-would-stop\">the controversial get-out-the-vote organization<\/a> the Center for Voter Information.<\/p>\n<p>But Bankman-Fried may not have been motivated by politics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point it looks like Sam was doing all this virtue signaling to hide what he was really up to,\u201d Pierce said. \u201cHis political contributions to the Democratic Party and all his philanthropy were about making himself look good and buying protection for what looks to pretty much everyone as a clear-cut case of fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivek Ramaswamy, the entrepreneur and author of \u201cWoke Inc.: Inside Corporate America\u2019s Social Justice Scam,\u201d said nothing about the demise of FTX and Bankman-Fried\u2019s alleged skulduggery was a shock to him.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/ftx-bankman-fried-4.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Samuel Bankman-Fried,\" class=\"wp-image-24634899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/ftx-bankman-fried-4.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/ftx-bankman-fried-4.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/ftx-bankman-fried-4.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Samuel Bankman-Fried was allegedly funneling money into a sister company ran by his girlfriend. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">SAUL LOEB\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEverything that everyone finds surprising about this situation is not surprising at all, and dates back to the 2008 financial crisis,\u201d he told The Post on Saturday. \u201cThis is another case of self-interested actors using the appearance of virtue to deflect from things they\u2019d rather not be questioned about. It\u2019s about masquerading as this great moral person being a large donor to the so-called good guys and calling for greater regulation in the industry at the same time. It\u2019s like tampering with the smoke detector in the airplane lavatory so you can still smoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FTX fiasco comes less than two weeks after\u00a0the mysterious death of pioneering cryptocurrency developer Nikolai Mushegian, who apparently drowned in the surf near his San Juan, Puerto Rico home on Oct. 28.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mushegian\u2019s body was spotted by surfers a few hours after he tweeted that the \u201cCIA and Mossad\u201d planned to murder him. Mushegian was a leader in so-called \u201cDeFi\u201d or decentralized finance, which has safeguards in place to prevent fraud.
