\n \u201cNew Girl\u201d star Jake Johnson steps into the world of sports comedy in \u201cHoops,\u201d a new animated series<\/a> on Netflix.<\/p>\n

In the series, premiering Friday, Johnson plays Ben Hopkins, a down-on-his-luck high school basketball coach in Kentucky with a slew of personal problems.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s in danger of losing his job; he\u2019s outshined by his father Barry (Rob Riggle), a former NBA star; and his best friend Ron (Ron Funches, \u201cBoJack Horseman\u201d) is dating his ex-wife, Shannon (Natasha Leggero).<\/p>\n

\u201cI liked the idea of doing an R-rated show and not watering it down, and just doing an animated series that was kind of gross-out and loud \u2014 and seeing if it would work,\u201d Johnson, 42, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you watch the first minute [of \u2018Hoops\u2019] and the tone is not for you, then turn it off, because it\u2019s not going to get better,\u201d he says. \u201cBut if it\u2019s right for you, then you\u2019re going to love all 10 episodes. It\u2019s not a show that twists and turns too many times. It hits this kind of hard-R late-night animation [tone] really consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s involvement in the series came about through his friendship with its creator, Ben Hoffman, which dates back 15 years to when they were new to Hollywood and showbiz.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were both in the same comedy scene when we first started [in LA],\u201d he says. \u201cWe made each other laugh, and then this thing came together years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to starring on \u201cHoops,\u201d Johnson is also one of its executive producers \u2014 a position he used to advocate for casting certain actors, including former \u201cNew Girl\u201d co-stars Damon Wayans Jr., Max Greenfield and Hannah Simone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have final say, but I was able to be listened to,\u201d he says. \u201cI thought Cleo King would be a perfect principal, so I was able to push for her. I really wanted Rob Riggle as my dad. I would have liked [\u2018New Girl\u2019 co-stars] Lamorne [Morris] and Zooey [Deschanel] as well \u2026 if we had the right parts for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson played Nick Miller, the grump with a heart of gold, on \u201cNew Girl,\u201d which aired on Fox from 2011-2018 and has seen a surge in popularity during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really popular right now because it\u2019s a positive show,\u201d he says. \u201cAt its core, there\u2019s a real sweetness to it. And I think more than anything, people want kindness right now. It\u2019s an easy show with relatable characters about people who like one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Nick Miller is his best known live-action role, Johnson is no stranger to animation, either, having lent his voice to the 2018 big-screen hit \u201cSpider-Man: Into the Spider-verse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the pace of animation a ton,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t love the process [in movies and TV] of getting ready and shooting and being on set all day, and having your hair and makeup done and wearing somebody else\u2019s clothes. I\u00a0 do love performing scenes with actors; animation cuts out all that other stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from \u201cHoops,\u201d Johnson is pulling double-duty co-starring opposite Cobie Smulders on the ABC crime drama \u201cStumptown,\u201d which was renewed for a second season in May.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey got a new showrunner for Season 2, Monica Owusu-Breen,\u201d he says. \u201cI think they wanted to keep what people liked about the first season but also add a new creative voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke to [Owusu-Breen] and she has really fun ideas. It\u2019s kind of a new start, and I\u2019m excited to see what they come up with.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
