target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> laid off a large portion of its contract workforce over the weekend, according to multiple reports.<\/p>\n<p> Platformer\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaseyNewton\/status\/1591608302076858371\" class=\"icon none\">Casey Newton first reported the layoffs<\/a> Saturday, and said Sunday that about 4,400 of Twitter\u2019s 5,500 contract workers in the U.S. and abroad had been let go. The cuts came without warning, Newton reported, with some workers not realizing they had been laid off until they lost access to their internal Slack and email. A MarketWatch email to Twitter seeking confirmation or comment was not returned Sunday; Twitter recently cut its entire communications staff.<\/p>\n<p>Citing an internal email it obtained, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/read-email-twitter-contractors-received-saying-they-lost-their-job-2022-11\" class=\"icon none\">Insider reported<\/a> the cuts were described as a \u201creprioritization and savings exercise.\u201d The email said that the affected workers\u2019 termination will be effective Monday, but \u201csystem and badge access will be shut off immediately.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The cuts came a little over a week after Twitter laid off about half its workforce of 7,500 people, in a cost-cutting move following its acquisition by billionaire Tesla<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/lastsale\" class=\"positive\">+2.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       CEO Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> Sen.
