With the largest pharmacies now settling, it represents a shift in the opioid litigation saga. For years, the question was whether companies would be held accountable for an overdose crisis that a flood of prescription drugs helped spark.<\/p>\n<p>With the crisis still raging, the focus now is on how the settlement dollars \u2014\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-ohio-lawsuits-covid-philanthropy-5e7a9cb18bd5a37061a6802059f9b15f\">now totaling more than $50 billion<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 will be used and whether they will help curtail record numbers of overdose deaths, even as prescription drugs have become a relatively small portion of the epidemic.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart said in a statement that it \u201cstrongly disputes\u201d allegations in lawsuits from state and local governments that its pharmacies improperly filled prescriptions for the powerful prescription painkillers. The company does not admit liability with the settlement, which\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/earnings-2a4e7ee7cec82cf5e4a3ab1d02cb7d5d\">would represent about 2% of its quarterly revenue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalmart believes the settlement framework is in the best interest of all parties and will provide significant aid to communities across the country in the fight against the opioid crisis, with aid reaching state and local governments faster than any other nationwide opioid settlement to date,\u201d the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers representing local governments said the company would pay most of the settlement over the next year if it is finalized.<\/p>\n<p>New York Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Letitia James said in a release that the company would have to comply with oversight measures, prevent fraudulent prescriptions and flag suspicious ones.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Fentanyl.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Fentanyl pills found by officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration are seen in an Oct. 4, 2022 photo.\" class=\"wp-image-24658678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Fentanyl.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Fentanyl.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Fentanyl pills found by officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration are seen in an Oct. 4, 2022 photo.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">via REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some government lawyers suggested Walmart has acted more responsibly than other pharmacies when it came to opioids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough Walmart filled significantly fewer prescriptions for opioids then CVS or Walgreens, since 2018 Walmart has been the most proactive in trying to monitor and control prescription opioid diversion attempted through its pharmacies,\u201d Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The deals are the product of negotiations with a group of state attorneys general, but they are not final. The CVS and Walgreens deals would have to be accepted first by a critical mass of state and local governments before they are completed.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart\u2019s plan would have to be approved by 43 states by Dec. 15, and local governments could sign on by March 31, 2023. Each state\u2019s allocation depends partly on how many local governments agree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies like Walmart need to step up and help by ensuring Pennsylvanians get the treatment and recovery resources they need,\u201d Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who last week was elected governor of his state, said in a statement. \u201cThis deal with Walmart adds to the important progress we\u2019ve already achieved through our settlements with the opioid manufacturers and distributors \u2013 and we\u2019re not done yet.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
