“#Reggaeton star Maluma drops surprise album \u2018Papi Juancho\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Reggaeton star \u2014 and Madonna collaborator \u2014 Maluma made it a very happ<\/a>y Friday for his fans when he dropped a surprise album, \u201cPapi Juancho,\u201d which he announced on Instagram Live at the stroke of midnight.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year has been, like, full of surprises, and they\u2019ve not been that positive,\u201d Maluma, 26, told The Post over the phone from Miami, where he\u2019s launching his new LP. \u201cI wanted to give a good, very positive surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPapi Juancho\u201d \u2014 which takes its name from Maluma\u2019s alter ego \u2014 arrives just nine days before he\u2019ll perform in New York at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, where he\u2019s up for the best Latin video (\u201cQu\u00e9 Pena,\u201d with J Balvin). Following up last year\u2019s \u201c11:11,\u201d his fifth album was made during quarantine in the singer\u2019s hometown of Medell\u00edn, Colombia, and Miami, his US base.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been working like crazy making new music,\u201d Maluma said of the 22-track set. \u201cWhen quarantine started, I was in Europe, and then I had to postpone the whole tour, so I went back to Colombia \u2026 I started recording by myself again, the way I used to do it when I started my career. I was, like, connected with myself, remembering my roots because I was there in Medell\u00edn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maluma \u2014 whose real name is Juan Luis Londo\u00f1o Arias \u2014 got back in touch with \u201cthis little kid, this little dreamer\u201d who started out in the reggaeton game<\/a> 10 years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was feeling that energy again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll be bringing that energy to the VMAs on Aug. 30, when he\u2019ll take the stage at one of various outdoor locations to do his new single, \u201cHaw\u00e1i.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s gonna be a big performance for me,\u201d said Maluma. \u201cI\u2019m gonna bring all the Hawaiian vibe to the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was two years ago at the VMAs that Maluma had a fateful meeting with Madonna.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was there in my dressing room, and then my manager goes, \u2018Yo, Madonna, she wants to meet you.\u2019 I was like, \u2018What? Who?\u2019 I thought he was joking,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then they took me to her dressing room, and Lenny Kravitz was there with her, so it was like a double surprise for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maluma went on to collaborate with Madonna on \u201cMedell\u00edn\u201d and \u201cBitch I\u2019m Loca\u201d \u2014 both on her \u201cMadame X\u201d album \u2014 as well as the \u201c11:11\u201d track \u201cSoltera.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMadonna, she\u2019s the queen, man,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd she\u2019s one of my friends, I can say. I love her more than in an artistic way, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

And Madonna isn\u2019t the only superstar diva who\u2019s been paying attention to Maluma: Jennifer Lopez reached out to him to make his movie debut in the upcoming romantic comedy \u201cMarry Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to become an actor,\u201d he said, \u201cand then Jennifer Lopez called me and said that she wanted me to be part of this project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maluma shot his scenes in New York, including one during his sold-out Madison Square Garden concert last October. La Lopez herself joined him onstage to sing \u201cNo Me Ames.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was beautiful, man. That was crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s a moment that is gonna stay in my memory forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maluma also teases an upcoming music joint with J.Lo, but despite the starry circles he\u2019s travel<\/a>ing in these days, he remains rooted in his family. In fact, that\u2019s how he came up with his stage name.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom\u2019s name is Marlli, my dad\u2019s name is Luis, and my sister\u2019s name is Manuela, so I took the first two letters of each name and I put it together,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how I became Maluma, because I would say that my family \u2026 I do everything for them.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
