Then, an empty soda bottle changed his life forever. <\/p>\n<p>Leonard\u2019s unusual journey is the subject of the new <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/signup\">Netflix<\/a> documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, \u201cPepsi, Where\u2019s My Jet?\u201d premiering Thursday. It looks at how he soared against one of the biggest corporations in the world over an outlandish offer made in a television commercial.   <\/p>\n<p>During the mid-1990s, the cola wars were running hot. In a bid to get jaded Gen Xers to choose it over Coca-Cola, Pepsi introduced the concept of Pepsi points, which could be redeemed for merch.  After years of lofty slogans, the advertising was suddenly surprisingly blunt: \u201cDrink Pepsi, Get Stuff.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A fountain drink got you one point, a 2-liter bottle was two points, and a 12-pack was worth five points. Prizes included baseball caps (60 points) and T-shirts (80 points) with a few big ticket items like mountain bikes (thousands). One upbeat television ad went so far as to advertise that a military grade Harrier jet could be had for a whopping 7,000,000 points. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pepsi Harrier Jet Commercial 1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZdackF2H7Qc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The comical commercial didn\u2019t feature any sort of disclaimer, fine print or legal notice telling viewers it was all a joke. Leonard became obsessed with actually getting enough points to get the fighter jet.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started thinking, geez, how could you actually make this work,\u201d Leonard said. \u201cBut I can\u2019t make it h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en. And I have had to find a crazy partner in the deal. The two had met on a mountain climbing expedition, and Hoffman considered himself something of a professional mentor to Leonard. When the younger man declared his Pepsi ambitions, Hoffman said he was in. <\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019d help him get the jet, and together they\u2019d start a company to lease and rent out the plane for air shows, film shoots and other events.  To make sure their ambitions were kosher, Leonard hopped on the phone to Boeing and the Pentagon, asking \u2014 under the guise of a school project \u2014 if a civilian could actually own a Harrier jet. <\/p>\n<p>Chief Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon told the young entrepreneur that as long as the aircraft was not armed nor had radar jamming <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, the answer was yes. <\/p>\n<p>Hoffman had Leonard draft a detailed business plan, and they set to work. The estimated cost was $3.4 million and would require 16M beverages. Hoffman sent his young prot\u00e9g\u00e9 back to the drawing board.  <\/p>\n<p>Then, while browsing a Pepsi catalog in a convenience store near his home, Leonard found a loophole, down in the fine print. For their trouble, they were given a fistful of coupons for free soda. <\/p>\n<p>Neither Leonard nor Hoffman were inclined to take no for an answer. In the docuseries, Michael Patti, then a creative director at BBDO Worldwide, the ad agency that created the campaign for PepsiCo, revealed that worried executives asked him to revise the commercial twice.  <\/p>\n<p>The first time, they changed the number of points needed to secure the free jet from 7,000,000 to 700,000,000 \u2014 the more absurd number Patti said he originally proposed. He wanted that damned jet. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, sure, [I would have settled],\u201d Leonard said. \u201cBut I still get a kick out of the fact that I had the chutzpah at that time to actually come to that conclusion. He\u2019s planning a five-week <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to India soon where he\u2019ll do nothing but explore and adventure.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard now lives in Washington, DC, with his wife, two children and a third on the way.
