Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have already begun to impact the hundreds of grant recipients across a variety of philanthropic organizations backed by the exchange.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried became known for backing a number of causes aimed at &#8220;humanity\u2019s long-term prospects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of these was the FTX Foundation and its FTX Future Fund, which publicly launched on Feb. 28 and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ftxfuturefund.org\/future-fund-june-2022-update\/\">reported<\/a> on Jun. 30 that it had made 262 grants and investments totaling $132 million in projects \u2014 many of these involved in pandemic preparedness, among other scientific pursuits. <\/p>\n<p>However, the leadership team of the Future Fund announced their <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.effectivealtruism.org\/posts\/xafpj3on76uRDoBja\/the-ftx-future-fund-team-has-resigned-1\">resignation<\/a> on Nov. 11 in a group post noting: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe are devastated to say that it looks likely that there are many committed grants that the Future Fund will be unable to honor.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/crypto-company-s-collapse-strands-scientists\">According<\/a> to a Nov. 14 report from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>.org, there have been a number of grant recipients now concerned about their future following the FTX collapse, with SecureBio\u2019s co-founder Kevin Esvelt suggesting that the firm is seeking emergency backup funding, stating: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe don\u2019t think it is right that anyone should lose their jobs over a financial calamity totally unrelated to the excellent work they are doing\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ftxfuturefund.org\/our-grants\/\">recipients<\/a> of the Future Fund\u2019s money include Bio<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> firm Sherlock Biosciences which was awarded $2 million to study infectious diseases, biotechnology firm HelixNano which was awarded $10 million for vaccine research, SecureBio which was awarded $1.2 to develop better pandemic defenses, and Our World in Data which was awarded $7.5 million to track trends relevant to humanity\u2019s long term prospects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><strong>What can blockchain do for increasing human longevity?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another foundation funded by Bankman-Fried \u2014 Building a Stronger Future \u2014 has given the first tranche of a $5 million grant to the non-profit investigative reporting organization ProPublica, with more funds initially planned to be distributed in 2023 and 2024. <\/p>\n<p>According to an email shared with the business magazine\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/11\/14\/bankman-fried-ftx-collapse-threatens-effective-altruism-billions-charity-philanthropy\/\">Fortune<\/a>, the remaining funds are on hold while Building a Stronger Future assesses its finances.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, lawyer and member of the Effective Altruism group Molly Kovite has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.effectivealtruism.org\/posts\/o8B9kCkwteSqZg9zc\/thoughts-on-legal-concerns-surrounding-the-ftx-situation\">warned<\/a> in a Nov. 14 post that organizations which received money from an FTX entity in the 90 days prior to the Chapter 11 filing on Nov. 11 may even be subject to a \u201cclawback\u201d and be required to pay all or some of the money back. <\/p>\n<p>Open Philanthropy, the philanthropic funder which Kovite represents, later shared in a Nov. 16 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.effectivealtruism.org\/posts\/HPdWWetJbv4z8eJEe\/open-phil-is-seeking-applications-from-grantees-impacted-by\">post<\/a> that it was seeking applications from grantees affected by the collapse of the Future Fund, and will evaluate the applications and provide funding at their discretion.<\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"markets_outlook\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
