Kathy Hochul <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have put New York\u2019s controversial bail reform law on the back burner following her electoral win over tough-on-crime challenger Lee Zeldin \u2014 despite bipartisan calls for action.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign, Hochul said she was \u201cwilling to revisit\u201d the crucial public safety issue when state lawmakers reconvene in January. She also vowed to start fixing New York \u201cfirst thing tomorrow\u201d as voters went to the polls. <\/p>\n<p>But her remarks since the Nov. 8 election have prompted speculation that Hochul will kick the can even further and fold such issues as bail reform, judicial discretion and \u201cRaise the Age\u201d into negotiations over the annual state budget due\u00a0April 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey certainly love to hide things like this in the budget,\u201d state Sen. Andrew Cuomo was reelected 60%-36% in 2018 before resigning last year to avoid impeachment over multiple scandals including the alleged groping, unwanted kissing or harassment of 11 women and covering up the true number of nursing home deaths from COVID-19, all of which he denies.<\/p>\n<p>Borrello blamed Hochul\u2019s \u201cthin margin of victory\u201d on voter \u201cdiscontent\u201d with Hochul\u2019s support for \u201cfar-left policies, first and foremost being bail reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Democratic Nassau County Executive Laura Curran \u2014 who was ousted last year in a backlash against bail reform \u2014 also said during a recent podcast that her party should have embraced Mayor Eric Adams\u2019 call to let judges lock up defendants\u00a0they deem threats to public safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats would have been smart to have allowed judges to consider dangerousness,\u201d she said. \u201cIf they had made that adjustment, I think it would have been very, very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/nypd-police-officers-handcuffed-suspect-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"NYPD\" class=\"wp-image-24681413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/nypd-police-officers-handcuffed-suspect-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/nypd-police-officers-handcuffed-suspect-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/nypd-police-officers-handcuffed-suspect-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Crime continues to increase in New York, harming innocent residents who want to see major reform im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP\/ Seth Wenig<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein (D-Brooklyn) told The Post that New York\u2019s bail law could be toughed in ways that don\u2019t \u201ctake us back to the old system that was<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>discriminatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Yorkers are not OK with the direction we are heading as it relates to crime and I think we should take note of that,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no shame in reforming bail reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But both Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-The Bronx) and Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) have been steadfastly opposed to any rollbacks\u200b, saying that data doesn\u2019t show bail reform is responsible for rising crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very interested in, obviously, that victims of crime are given their proper redress but also we don\u2019t want to again criminalize people for being poor,\u201d Stewart-Cousins told Spectrum <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>During a post-election <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> to the annual SOMOS political conference in Puerto Rico, Hochul was vague on her plans for bail reform beyond saying she wanted New Yorkers to have \u201cthe sense of safety that they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will take the time with my team, and people in [the Division of] Criminal Justice Services, my advisers and my legal team to come up with any way we think we can improve public safety,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A Hochul spokesperson declined to comment beyond Hochul\u2019s previous remarks.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
