While they weren\u2019t expecting the historic birth, they were still prepared with a specialized milk replacer to help the second calf grow strong. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t commend my team enough for all they have done these past few weeks to ensure the care and safety of Mali and her twins. Mali and Doc\u2019s previous two calves died from elephant endotheliotropic herpes virus, which is the leading cause of death among young elephants. <\/p>\n<p>As part of the research efforts into EEHV, Mali\u2019s placentas were transported to Baylor University for elephant research, where they will be studied and used in research toward the development of a vaccine to combat EEHV. <\/p>\n<p>The twins bring the zoo\u2019s elephant population up to eight. The Helga Beck Asian Elephant Preserve, which houses the creatures, has a family dynamic that mimics natural herd compositions in the wild, the zoo said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
