It\u2019s a distinction she still holds.<\/p>\n<p>From that unique perspective, she championed bill after bill to advance women\u2019s causes \u2014\u00a0including efforts this year to codify Roe vs. Wade following the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to eliminate abortion rights. And Pelosi\u2019s speech on Thursday from the House floor \u2014 where she introduced herself as not only Speaker, but \u201ca wife, a mother, a grandmother\u201d \u2014 was thick with references to the progress women have made since she was first elected 35 years ago \u2014 and the long strides that remain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came to the Congress in 1987, there were 12 Democratic women. Now there are over 90,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we want more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s legislative legacy is well known: She muscled through proposals as consequential as ObamaCare, the sweeping Wall Street reforms that followed the Great Recession and the massive climate package signed by President Biden this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than that, she carved a well-earned reputation for counting votes and convincing reluctant lawmakers to support controversial legislation, even when it damaged them politically.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The combination made her among the most effective Speakers in U.S. history \u2014 and inspired women to follow her into politics.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s broken glass ceilings and been a true role model for generations of women\u2014including myself,\u201d said Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_unifying_speech\"><\/span><strong>A unifying speech\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pelosi comes from a family steeped in the traditions of the Democratic Party \u2014\u00a0her father was a member of the House through much of the 1940s \u2014\u00a0and she can be fiercely partisan in her confrontations with Republicans on countless issues of politics and policy. But her speech on Thursday avoided the type of partisan fire breathing that\u2019s become routine on Capitol Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Instead, Pelosi sought to meet the moment with a message of unity and high ideals, invoking legendary Republican figures like Daniel Webster and Abraham Lincoln to make the case that fighting for the country\u2019s founding principles is a shared business.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe to the American people our very best, to deliver on their faith,\u201d she said. \u201cTo forever reach for the more perfect union \u2014 the glorious horizon that our founders promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If there was a partisan jab at the Republicans on Thursday, it was not what Pelosi said but what she left out. In referencing the presidents she\u2019s \u201cenjoyed working with,\u201d Pelosi mentioned George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden \u2014\u00a0but not Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>It was a glaring omission, though it didn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to bother the handful of GOP lawmakers who were in the chamber to hear the speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was very positive,\u201d said Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), who was among those Republicans on hand. \u201cI was happy to be there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Changing_of_the_guard\"><\/span><strong>Changing of the guard\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s decision paves the way for a \u201cnew generation\u201d of liberals to rise in the Democratic ranks, breaking the leadership logjam that the \u201cbig three\u201d \u2014\u00a0Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn \u2014 have formed over their two-decade tenure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic Caucus that I so deeply respect,\u201d Pelosi said in her remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after the Speaker\u2019s decision, Hoyer \u2014\u00a0who has served as Pelosi\u2019s No. 2 for years \u2014\u00a0announced that he would also step back from Democratic leadership next year, setting the scene for a seismic shakeup at the top echelons of the caucus that will usher in a new slate of liberal leaders. Clyburn has said he intends to remain in leadership, but has not indicated which position.<\/p>\n<p>The announcements were music to the ears of younger, restive lawmakers whose ambitions have been frustrated for years by the leadership bottleneck at the very top.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But that changing of the guard, while officially put into motion on Thursday, has been the talk of Washington for months. Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) and Caucus Vice Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) are viewed as the heir apparents to the \u201cbig three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>None of them, however, announced bids on Thursday, opting to make their longtime leader the focus of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all just trying to process what we heard and honor the legacy of Speaker Pelosi, what she\u2019s meant to that chamber, what she\u2019s meant to the California delegation and what she\u2019s meant to me personally,\u201d Aguilar told reporters. \u201cThose are the things I\u2019m reflecting on right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But while Pelosi and Hoyer are both on their way to becoming rank-and-file members, they\u2019re viewing the move differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel balanced about it all,\u201d the Speaker\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/midterm-elections-congress-house-results\/card\/pelosi-on-the-end-of-her-era-i-feel-balanced-about-it-all--WwPrEl13uTt1Jfq3Sdmp\">told reporters<\/a>\u00a0in the Capitol. \u201cI\u2019m not sad at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoyer, on the other hand, asked how it feels to step out of the leadership, responded, \u201cNot good.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_divided_Congress_and_country\"><\/span><strong>A divided Congress and country<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Party polarization has worsened dramatically over the course of Pelosi\u2019s years on Capitol Hill. And the House chamber during Pelosi\u2019s speech was a glaring portrait of the stark partisan divisions that plague both the Congress and the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>On one side were Pelosi\u2019s Democratic allies, who filled virtually every chair and cheered her numerous times during the 16-minute address. On the other were just a handful of Republicans \u2014 and hundreds of empty seats.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans who were on hand \u2014\u00a0including Minority Whip Steve Scalise (La.) \u2014\u00a0were glowing in their characterization of the outgoing Speaker, even as they emphasized their policy differences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been historic,\u201d said Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.). \u201cShe\u2019s been strong for her conference all this time. There\u2019s a rivalry with opposite teams and all that stuff, but you know, at the end of the day, we all try to remember and reflect on how you get along with people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the empty GOP seats were a ready reminder of the tensions that linger between the parties, particularly following last year\u2019s attack on the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was among the absent Republicans. And some Democrats said they weren\u2019t surprised by the GOP no-shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have unfortunately come to expect an utter lack of regard for civility, collegiality, institutional respect, and frankly even respect for the American public,\u201d Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said of the Republicans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American public sent them a message, whether they want to accept it or not, last Tuesday. Which was: We want less of that. We want less divisiveness, less anger, less of this craziness and a lot more civility and respect,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd it\u2019s as if they heard nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Warning_about_democracy\"><\/span><strong>Warning about democracy\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The final chapter of Pelosi\u2019s tenure as Democratic leader will be marked by her dogged defense of American democracy\u00a0\u2014 even when it put her in direct conflict with her political foes.<\/p>\n<p>As Speaker, Pelosi led two impeachments of former President Trump, established a select committee to investigate the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and ensured that the House would reconvene after the rampage to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election \u2014\u00a0in the very chamber rioters had infiltrated.<\/p>\n<p>In her remarks on Thursday, Pelosi took pains not to attack Republicans, but argued clearly for the importance of safeguarding America\u2019s founding principles if the country is to survive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerican Democracy is majestic \u2013 but it is fragile,\u201d the Speaker said. \u201cMany of us here have witnessed its fragility firsthand \u2013 tragically, in this Chamber. And so, Democracy must be forever defended from forces that wish it harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi\u2019s decision to step down came just a day after the formal midterm results had turned the House to Republican control.
