Microsoft seeks to help you solve this problem with Check Performance. Here\u2019s how it works.<\/p>\n<p>With Check Performance, you can see empty cells in your workbook that contain formatting, whether visible or not. You might have had data in these cells at one time. Even though that data is now gone, the formatting remains and adds to the size of the workbook. This can cause a slowdown in performance.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> As of September 2022, the feature is available to Microsoft 365 subscribers using Excel for the web.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check_the_Performance_of_an_Excel_Workbook\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_0\">Check the Performance of an Excel Workbook<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Visit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.office.com\/launch\/excel\">Excel on the web<\/a>, sign in, and open the workbook you want to review. You may see a message in yellow at the top encouraging you to try out the feature by providing a link. But you can access it manually too.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the Review tab and select \u201cCheck Performance\u201d in the ribbon. You\u2019ll see which cells can be optimized using the cell reference(s). Microsoft allows you to control how you\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/764717\/how-to-clear-formatting-in-microsoft-excel\/\">remove the formatting (if you want to).<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Clear Formatting in Microsoft Excel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Optimize_the_Workbook\"><\/span>Optimize the Workbook<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you want to optimize the entire workbook in one fell swoop, this is the simplest option. Select a sheet from the list in the Workbook Performance sidebar. Start by selecting a sheet in the Workbook Performance sidebar. Then, click the cell reference or range in the box to highlight the cell(s) in the sheet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Remove Table Formatting in Microsoft Excel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since you can see the formatting that\u2019s contributing to how the workbook performs, you can then remove that formatting from the cell(s) yourself if you want.<\/p>\n<p>An easy way to do this, especially if the cell(s) contains several formatting types, is to go to the Home tab and select the three dots on the right side of the ribbon for More Options. So, you may see a message in the sidebar to recheck the workbook.
