The lack of a centralized database can make it difficult to find the friends (and Brands\u2122\ufe0f) you talk to on other platforms, but it\u2019s not too hard to find them.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_Your_Friends_From_Twitter\"><\/span>Finding Your Friends From Twitter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Mastodon is mostly designed as an alternative to Twitter, so most of the \u201cmigration\u201d tools are built around Twitter. The most useful search tool is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pruvisto.org\/debirdify\/\">Debirdify<\/a>, which scans the profiles of everyone you follow on Twitter for a linked Mastodon account \u2014 in the bio, name, somewhere else. It\u2019s an automated method of looking at everyone you follow to find their Mastodon username. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fedifinder.glitch.me\/\">Fedifinder<\/a> is another tool that works similarly.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pruvisto.org\/debirdify\/\">open Debirdify in your web browser<\/a>, and click the \u201cAuthorize with Twitter\u201d button. This will allow Debirdify to scan your Follows list with Twitter\u2019s official API.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-848773\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Untitled-1.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Debirdify authorize button\" width=\"1250\" height=\"580\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After that, just click the \u201cSearch followed accounts\u201d button. Depending on how many people you follow on Twitter, it should only take a few seconds. The web <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> will then display a list of every Mastodon account it found, including their name, sorted by the server (\u201cinstance\u201d) they are located on. Debirdify also generates some cool graphs based on server data.<\/p>\n<p>You can scroll through the list and follow anyone you want \u2014 the easiest way is to copy their username (e.g. example@mastodon.social) and paste it in the search bar of your Mastodon website or mobile app. Then you can just click the follow button.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1958px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-848822 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Untitled-4.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"List of accounts on Debirdify\" width=\"1958\" height=\"940\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A list of accounts to follow from my Twitter on Debirdify<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s also a way to follow\u00a0<em>everyone<\/em> that Debirdify finds on Mastodon in a few clicks. Click the big \u201cDownload CSV Export\u201d button near the bottom of Debirdify \u2014 this will save a list of Mastodon accounts in a format that Mastodon can recognize. In your Mastodon website, click the <strong>Preferences<\/strong> link, then navigate to <strong>Import and Export &gt; Data export<\/strong>. You can also go straight to example.com\/settings\/import, replacing \u201cexample.com\u201d with the domain of your Mastodon server.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re on the Import page, make sure the dropdown menu is set to \u201cFollowing list,\u201d and the \u201cMerge\u201d checkbox is checked instead of \u201cOverwrite.\u201d Then click the choose file button and select the CSV file you just downloaded from Debirdify.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-848817\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Untitled-3.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Importing a following list on Mastodon\" width=\"2334\" height=\"1402\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>After all that, click the Upload button. Your Mastodon server will queue up every account in the list to follow, though it could take a while, depending on how many accounts are in the list and how busy the Mastodon server is at the time.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Finding_Your_Friends_From_Other_Sites\"><\/span>Finding Your Friends From Other Sites<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, there\u2019s not an automated tool like Debirdify for quickly finding people you already know (and Brands\u2122\ufe0f) on Mastodon for other platforms, like Facebook or Instagram. For the moment, your best option is to go through your list of friends and followed accounts, and check their name and other profile info for a Mastodon link or username. For example, on Facebook, you can search for \u201cMastodon\u201d on the search page\/tab and narrow down the results to just posts from your friends. That will only work for friends who have posted about it, rather than just adding a link to their profile, but it\u2019s <em>something<\/em>. You can also make a post linking to your account, and let your friends find you.<\/p>\n<p>Once you know someone\u2019s username, you can copy and paste it into the search bar in your Mastodon interface.
