That is very much not the case. Outside of the bubble, most people simply do not care about the bird site.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of attention has been put on Twitter since Elon Musk completed his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/10\/27\/23184519\/elon-musk-twitter-acquisition-deal-complete-agreement\">$44 Billion takeover<\/a>. However\u2014as he\u2019s finding out\u2014Twitter is really not very popular. The platform has an inflated sense of importance for a variety of reasons.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Twitter_in_Perspective\"><\/span>Twitter in Perspective<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Twitter is one of the original mainstream social networks on the internet. It was launched in 2006, around the same time that Facebook was taking off and Google bought YouTube. It\u2019s been around for a long time, but it\u2019s never been as popular as its competitors.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"riOhTYNJ2BY\" style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/riOhTYNJ2BY\/hqdefault.jpg');\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"lty-playbtn\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"lyt-visually-hidden\">Play Video<\/span><br \/>\n<\/button>\n<\/lite-youtube>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=riOhTYNJ2BY\">video embedded above<\/a> gives us an excellent look at social media growth from 2004 to 2022. There are a few familiar names consistently at the top\u2014Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram\u2014but Twitter is not one of them.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few stats to put Twitter\u2019s size into perspective:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter was the third most popular social media site for a period of time in 2011-2012. That\u2019s the best it\u2019s ever been.<\/li>\n<li>Tumblr has had more users than Twitter for much of its existence.<\/li>\n<li>Instagram passed Twitter in users in less than four years despite Twitter having a four-year head start.<\/li>\n<li>TikTok had more users than Twitter before it was even available in the U.S.<\/li>\n<li>Pinterest had more users than Twitter as recently as February 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In January 2022, Twitter was behind Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Telegram, and Pinterest in monthly active users. That has to do with <em>who<\/em> is using Twitter\u2014journalists, politicians, and celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people who garner attention are using Twitter to broadcast their thoughts out into the world. Even if you don\u2019t use Twitter, you\u2019ve probably seen tweets in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. \u201c[Celebrity] says [blank] about their co-star!\u201d \u201c[Political candidate] slams their opponent over [blank]!\u201d You get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone can make an account and interact with those\u00a0journalists, politicians, and celebrities, but you don\u2019t really have to. Even if you never use the site, what\u2019s happening on Twitter is being regurgitated into the news cycle. This gives the impression that it\u2019s more popular than it really is.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the big difference between Twitter and a site like Tumblr. They\u2019re both relatively similar in size, but Tumblr doesn\u2019t have a lot of\u00a0journalists, politicians, and celebrities. Big names are good for Twitter\u2019s clout, but not its bottom line.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Twitter_Loves_Twitter\"><\/span>Twitter Loves Twitter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The other thing that contributes to Twitter\u2019s inflated place in the social media world is how much people on Twitter talk about Twitter. I am a long-time Twitter user, and let me tell you\u2014we love to talk shop.<\/p>\n<p>In my little journalism bubble, Twitter is where all the conversation happens. Not only do we talk about our work, but we talk about the very tools that enable it. Twitter is one of those tools. Elon Musk\u2019s Twitter acquisition has been a huge topic because it directly affects that work.<\/p>\n<p>This is a somewhat unique thing about Twitter. Even the celebrities who use Twitter will often talk about Twitter. The platform itself is part of the conversation. YouTube is similar in that people who make YouTube videos love to talk about YouTube. People who use Twitter love to talk about Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>Every social media network is a bubble to some degree, but Twitter\u2019s bubble is much smaller than those of us on Twitter would like to admit.
