Kennedy was assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, graduate student Paul Gregory shared in the nation\u2019s horror.<\/p>\n<p>But his shock was compounded when, watching TV a couple hours later, he saw his former friend Lee Harvey Oswald in handcuffs for committing the assassination.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, \u201cwithin an hour, it made sense to me,\u201d Gregory told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>While Gregory had no inkling of Oswald\u2019s plans, his former friend\u2019s secretive nature, intelligence, grandiosity, inferiority complex and violent ways all added up to the picture of a lone-wolf assassin, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next morning when the Secret Service came to question me, I told them, \u2018I\u2019m convinced he did it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his new book, \u201cThe Oswalds: An Untold Account of Marina and Lee,\u201d Gregory, 81, recalls his first evening in the company of Lee and his wife, Marina, when all three were in their 20s. Peter agreed to accept a visit from the young man at his Fort Worth office.<\/p>\n<p>That man was 22-year-old Lee Harvey Oswald.<\/p>\n<p>Oswald was a former Marine who had defected to the USSR and then returned to the US, while Marina was a native-born Russian living in America \u2014 a rarity at the height of the Cold War.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/pete-elizabeth-gregory.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Pete and Elizabeth Gregory (Paul's parents, left) in 1962 with George Bouhe, head of the Dallas Russians who tried to help the Oswalds. \" class=\"wp-image-24700581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/pete-elizabeth-gregory.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/pete-elizabeth-gregory.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/pete-elizabeth-gregory.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Pete and Elizabeth Gregory (Paul\u2019s parents, left) in 1962 with George Bouhe, head of the Dallas Russians who tried to help the Oswalds. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Peter was part of a group of prominent local Russians \u2014 known as the \u201cDallas Russians\u201d \u2014 who were \u201cavid anti-Communists [who] considered their new home the land of milk and honey.\u201d Nonetheless, he befriended the Oswalds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember, the Iron Curtain was impenetrable,\u201d said Gregory. \u201cThe Fort Worth-Dallas Russians were like displaced persons\u201d and they wished to hear from the young couple about life in the USSR.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote><p>\u2018If Lee Harvey Oswald (had grown up) today, he would have probably become a school shooter.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><cite>Paul Gregory<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>There was also a desire to help Marina, who was, according to Gregory, a quiet, attractive young woman with the look of a \u201clost kitten.\u201d Gradually the Dallas Russians became aware, especially when they saw black eyes on Marina\u2019s face, that she was being abused by Oswald.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they went to parties, Marina would <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ize but Lee was the embodiment of a loner, standing in a corner,\u201d said Gregory. \u201cHe was regarded as unfortunate baggage . . . However, he permitted her to teach Russian to Gregory, which is how Marina and Gregory became friends when they were just 21. <\/p>\n<p>Studying Russian with Marina biweekly, Gregory often volunteered to take the couple grocery shopping because they did not own a car or a baby carriage. June, who gave an interview to The New York Times in 1995 and has avoided the spotlight since, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/04\/30\/magazine\/lee-harveys-oldest-june-oswald.html\">grew up to live an ordinary life<\/a> as a mother and businesswoman. Rachel is also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/stories\/1995\/mar\/12\/growing-up-the-daughter-of-an-assassin-shadow-of\/\">reportedly<\/a> alive and well.<\/p>\n<p>At present, Marina Porter, 81, lives a quiet life in Rockwall, outside Dallas. In response to The Post\u2019s request for an interview, she wrote back: \u201cI don\u2019t want to make a comment. Need my privacy. Gregory agrees, adding that he believes Oswald\u2019s intense, tormented relationship with Marina, and his desire to appear important in her eyes, played a role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Lee Harvey Oswald [had grown up] today, he would probably have become a school shooter,\u201d said Gregory. \u201cHe might [again] have . . .  gone after a public figure, someone whose death would get him into the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s even possible that Oswald killed JFK because the young president was seen as the ultimate symbol of American masculinity and power \u2014 and because Marina liked him.<\/p>\n<p>As Gregory said, \u201che knew that by killing JFK, he would wound Marina sorely.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
