There\u2019s the faith Mo Amer\u2019s character and his family have in the American legal system that they hope will make them citizens after years of living as refugees, but there\u2019s also religious faith \u2014 Mo\u2019s Islamic beliefs, his Mexican American girlfriend\u2019s Catholicism, and the idea (present in most creeds) that everybody from any background could live together in harmony. But it\u2019s also a show about olive oil. There\u2019s a lot of it in <em>Mo<\/em>. The fictionalized version of Amer is very particular about it, and the liquid gold has a Proustian effect that recalls h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ier times growing up in another place, before his family had to run from their home in Palestine to Kuwait, then to America after the onset of the Gulf War.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    So what does the real Mo Amer look for in olive oil? \u201cI look out for the flakes. If it has olive flakes in it, then that\u2019s the real deal. If it\u2019s super clear, more bright yellow than dark green, then I\u2019m usually out. I\u2019ll cook with that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The problem with faith, as many immigrants or refugees like Amer (who took a similar route as his onscreen persona, born in Kuwait to Palestinian parents who moved him to Houston, Texas, when he was a child) can tell you, is that it can set you up for crushing disappointment. That\u2019s where <em>Mo<\/em> shines. Sometimes it\u2019s a joke during a particularly heavy moment, but it\u2019s also in subtle little bits \u2014 like when Mo interviews for a security job at a s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> club. \u201cYou won\u2019t be our first illegal,\u201d the owner says, and without a hint of irony adds, \u201cbut you\u2019d be our first Arab. That would be a historic hire here at Dreams.\u201d It\u2019s funny, but it\u2019s also sad. Comedy and tragedy are supposedly one and the same, but putting them together can be like mixing water with olive oil. \u201cIt has so much,\u201d says Amer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>. \u201cTrying to unpackage everything and then be like, \u2018Whoa, is this still a comedy?\u2019 Because there is some very sad stuff there, and we\u2019ve got to make sure it\u2019s balanced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Amer describes <em>Mo<\/em> as an exercise in comedic catharsis. \u201cTo be so vulnerable in front of a camera, it\u2019s scary, man.\u201d He recalls a mentor telling him that, when he acts, he should \u201cbe so honest that it\u2019s hard to make eye contact with you.\u201d He kept that in mind through the making of <em>Mo<\/em>. \u201cAnd that happened,\u201d he says \u2014 people not being able to look him in the eye after a scene \u2014 a lot. Making that work comedically isn\u2019t easy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cParsing out the emotions was probably one of the hardest things we did,\u201d he says of sketching out how the show would work. The whole experience of making the show was an emotional one for Amer. When he starts talking about a scene in which Mo\u2019s mother \u2014 played by the scene-stealing Farah Bsieso \u2014 makes oil out of olives her son brought her, Amer begins to get choked up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    He\u2019s also proud that his team tracked down a musical track from an old Syrian TV show called <em>Ghawar<\/em>. \u201cI only saw my father cry on two occasions: When my grandmother passed away, and when he watched the scene from the show that used that song. It made such an impact on me. I always said that when I get my own show, I\u2019m going to use that song.
