Murrow High School in Brooklyn were tasked with a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of rudimentary assignments based on childhood fables and fairy tales \u2014 third grade-level classwork that stunned critics and parents called \u201ceducational neglect.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>After reading \u201cGoldilocks and the Three Bears\u201d and \u201cThe Tortoise and the Hare\u201d this semester,  the 11th-grade <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> education students were then tasked with answering simple questions, such as \u201cWho?\u201d \u201cWhat?\u201d \u201cWhen?\u201d and \u201cWhy?\u201d according to students who provided copies of the lessons to The Post.<\/p>\n<p>For an answer to \u201cWhat?\u201d in \u201cGoldilocks,\u201d one student answered, \u201ceat bears\u2019 food + slept in beds.\u201d The \u201cWhy\u201d was \u201chungry + tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They were then directed to write a summary sentence of the \u201cliterature.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-nypost-small-post\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"231\" height=\"259\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?w=231\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24724270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=462 462w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=347 346w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=231 231w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=116 115w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Front-Cover-11-20-2022.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Students at the Midwood school were initially as taken aback as the little bear was over his missing porridge \u2014 when they saw the sheer simplicity of the assignments. But they were savvy enough to realize a good thing when they saw one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was confused why we had it at first but I was like \u2018F\u2013k, it\u2019s an easy assignment.\u2019 I\u2019m not complaining,\u201d shrugged one junior outside the school this week.<\/p>\n<p>Another student called American Literature \u201cthe easiest class that I have\u201d and speculated that the worksheet on the \u201cTortoise and the Hare\u201d would account for 10% of her grade.<\/p>\n<p>A third student  showed an instruction sheet on writing summary sentences she received a few weeks ago, with \u201cGoldilocks\u201d as the example.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/goldilocks-murrow-hs-featured.jpg?w=815\" alt=\"The worksheet on \u201cGoldilocks\u201d given to 11th grade students at Edward R. Mango<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Department of Education spokesman Nathaniel Styer didn\u2019t directly respond to questions by The Post. Instead, he posted a lengthy defense on Twitter claiming the lesson will help prepare students for a tougher, similar assignment involving Nathaniel Hawthorne\u2019s  \u201cThe Scarlet Letter,\u201d which is more age-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate for high schoolers. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what educators call \u2018scaffolding,\u2019\u201d he tweeted. \u201cYou introduce a topic, have the students practice it on something easy, before you have them work with something complex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But one of the Murrow juniors said his class was assigned to read only a seven-page summary of \u201cThe Scarlet Letter,\u201d not the full 272-page classic. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe never read any full chapters of \u201cThe Scarlet Letter\u201d and we never read the actual book in any way,\u201d the student contended.<\/p>\n<p>The kiddie-themed lessons galled some educators and advocates, especially given the reputation of the school, which was attended by the likes of famed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/03\/05\/marisa-tomei-was-paid-upfront-for-her-role-in-the-king-of-staten-island\/?_gl=1*37oxsx*_ga*MTI2OTA1NjQ3NC4xNjY3NTc2NDc3*_ga_0DZ7LHF5PZ*MTY2ODYzNjU0NC40Ny4xLjE2Njg2MzY5MzkuMC4wLjA.&amp;_ga=2.44045028.1912598302.1668528481-1269056474.1667576477\">actress Marisa Tomei<\/a>, Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys and \u201cBlack Swan\u201d director Darren Aronofsky.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is horrifying to hear,\u201d said an English teacher at another New York City public high school. \u201cTo use the \u2018Tortoise and the Hare\u2019 or \u2018Goldilocks and the Three Bears\u2019 as a modified scaffolding technique undermines where a child should be in the 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0grade. That sounds like educational neglect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A 2015 article in the journal Instructional <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> looked at 768 students aged 12-15 in the European Union and found that scaffolding is no panacea. \u201cScaffolding \u2026 is not unequivocally effective; its effectiveness depends, among other things, on the independent working time of the groups and students\u2019 task effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chien Kwok, a parent leader and member of the Community Education Council in Manhattan\u2019s District 2, said the state has been continually lowering standards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing a five-page synopsis of \u2018The Scarlet Letter\u2019 rather than having students read the whole book just confirms how low the standards have gotten at DOE,\u201d\u00a0said Kwok, co-founder of PLACE NYC, a parent-led education advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p>Murrow has about 3,600 students and a solid academic reputation with a graduation rate of 86% in 2021. Only 8% of students are deemed English language learners, but about 47% of incoming eighth-graders did not meet state standards in English language arts in 2019-20, the latest year available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m appalled that a teacher or a high school would think that having kids start at a third-grade reading level\u00a0for an 11th-grade English class would be appropriate,\u201d\u00a0said one parent who does not have children at Murrow.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s also shocking that they would read an abridged version of\u201d The Scarlet Letter \u201cand not the full book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe DOE is not consistently teaching kids across the board. Murrow is supposed to be a good school.
