NASA officials said on Friday.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\"><!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><br \/>\n      <\/section>\n<p>The spacecraft is to take astronauts to the Moon in the coming years\u2014the first to set foot on its surface since the last Apollo mission in 1972. <\/p>\n<p>This first test flight, without a crew on board, aims to ensure that the vehicle is safe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today we met to review the Orion spacecraft performance&#8230; it is exceeding performance expectations,&#8221; said Mike Sarafin, head of the Artemis 1 mission. <\/p>\n<p>The spacecraft&#8217;s four solar panels, about 13 feet (four meters) long, deployed correctly and are providing more energy than expected, said Jim Geffre, the Orion manager at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. <\/p>\n<p>It is from that control center in Texas that the spacecraft is being piloted. <\/p>\n<p>Orion is already some 200,000 miles (320,000 kilometers) from Earth and preparing to perform the first of four main thrusts scheduled during the mission using its engines. <\/p>\n<p>This maneuver, which will take place early Monday morning, will bring the spacecraft as close as 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the lunar surface, in order to take advantage of the Moon&#8217;s gravitational force. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"mb-4\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/VideoObject\"><meta itemprop=\"name\" content=\"NASA Moon mission 'exceeding' expectaions\"\/><meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch\/?v=5Wu4D-Db678\"\/><meta itemprop=\"description\" content=\"NASA Moon mission 'exceeding' expectaions\"\/><meta itemprop=\"uploadDate\" content=\"2022-11-19T05:57:51-05:00\"\/><meta itemprop=\"embedUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Wu4D-Db678\"\/><meta itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" content=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/5Wu4D-Db678\/maxresdefault.jpg\"\/><br \/>\n             <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet the Artemis I mission\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5Wu4D-Db678?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximately 35 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be passing over some of the Apollo landing sites,&#8221; said  flight director Jeff Radigan, although they will be in darkness.
