\n The knee-on-the-neck arrest of George Floyd had nothing to do with his death \u2014 because he actually \u201ckilled himself,\u201d a lawyer for one of the four charged cops has claimed.<\/p>\n

Earl Gray, the attorney for Thomas Lane, has already filed court papers trying to dismiss the fired officer\u2019s charges, insisting the real cause of Floyd\u2019s death was an overdose of the powerful opioid fentanyl.<\/p>\n

Gray now claims it will help clear all of the fired cops \u2014 even Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis officer filmed with his knee on Floyd\u2019s neck for almost eight minutes as he begged, \u201cI can\u2019t breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNone of these guys \u2014 even Chauvin \u2014 actually killed him,\u201d Gray told the Los Angeles Times of the May death ruled a homicide by the medical examiner.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe killed himself,\u201d he insisted of Floyd, whose death sparked months of often violent protests across the US and parts of the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to show that my client and the other cops were doing their jobs,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n

The veteran criminal defense attorney said he will base his case on toxicology and autopsy reports, which found fentanyl and methamphetamine in Floyd\u2019s system.<\/p>\n

Recently released police body camera footage also gave a fuller picture of the arrest, including the disapp<\/a>earance of a white spot on Floyd\u2019s tongue that looks like \u201c2 milligrams of fentanyl, a lethal dose,\u201d he has said.<\/p>\n

Floyd also told the officers he\u2019d been \u201chooping,\u201d slang for taking drugs, the report noted.<\/p>\n

Legal experts believe the case could prove less clear-cut than the initial rush to judgment by the public.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a slam dunk for the prosecution and not an easy case, especially for the higher-degree homicide charges,\u201d Philip Stinson, a Bowling Green State University criminologist and former cop who studies police misconduct, told the LA paper.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf this case goes to trial and an officer testifies on his own behalf, it is possible there is reasonable doubt there for jurors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chauvin is charged with Floyd\u2019s murder. Lane and two other officers \u2014 Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao \u2014 each face charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.<\/p>\n

All four were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department after footage of the death emerged.<\/p>\n

Attorneys for Chauvin, Kueng and Thao declined to comment on Gray\u2019s remarks, as did prosecutors in the case, the Los Angeles Times said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
