Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/11\/11\/yale-suicides-mental-health-withdrawals\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\">The Washington Post published a story<\/a>\u00a0Nov. 11 reporting that current and former students claimed to have been pressured by university administrators to withdraw once their mental health problems were known, after which they were required to go through a cumbersome reapplication process to get back into the school.<\/p>\n<p>More than 25 current and former Yale students told the outlet they were upset by what they described as Yale\u2019s inadequate policies and services for students in the throes of a mental health crisis, despite the institution\u2019s $41.4 billion endowment.<\/p>\n<p>In instances reported by those who spoke with The Washington Post, some students failed to hear back after they reached out for mental health assistance, while others received limited counseling sessions. The letter claimed the report ignored Yale\u2019s \u201ccomplex and nuanced endeavor\u201d to deal with students\u2019 mental health, warning the article \u201ccould put more students at risk\u201d by making them believe they should stay in school regardless of their mental health condition.<\/p>\n<p>President Peter Salovey also\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/president.yale.edu\/student-mental-health-yale\">published a letter<\/a>\u00a0on the school\u2019s website in response to backlash from Yale alumni because of the story.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be clear, the health and well-being of Yale students are primary university priorities,\u201d Salovey wrote. \u201cThe Washington Post article does not reflect Yale\u2019s efforts to foster student wellness. And that\u2019s the basis for our decision-making and nothing else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia Floyd, a former Yale student who\u00a0attempted suicide\u00a0in 2000, told the paper that college administrators \u201cmissed the whole point of the article and those students who were brave enough to speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem is how awful they can make it to leave and return.
