On \u2018SNL,&#8217;\u201d later adding, \u201cWell, you\u2019re not being that much canceled, are you? You shouldn\u2019t moan about the audience. There\u2019s nothing wrong with the audience. If they don\u2019t laugh at your jokes, there\u2019s something wrong with your joke. That\u2019s like putting diesel in a Tesla.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in that world,\u201d he said, explaining that he was a \u201cwar baby\u201d from World War II, noting that fascism was \u201cvery real to us, fascism \u2014 what can happen if you let one person take over a country, so that still rings very strongly with me in my soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also slammed conservatives in his own country: \u201cI hate them intensely, I\u2019ve always hated conservatives, I\u2019m afraid to say I\u2019m very prejudiced against them, they\u2019re horrible people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, one of the fellow members of the Monty Python comedy troupe, John Cleese, has railed against cancel culture, even if he identifies as a \u201cliberal\u201d himself.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/eric-idle-woke-03.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A picture of Michael Palin and Eric Idle during a performance.\" class=\"wp-image-24750467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/eric-idle-woke-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/eric-idle-woke-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/eric-idle-woke-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Idle also slammed conservatives in his own country, saying he is \u201cvery prejudiced against them\u201d and that \u201cthey\u2019re horrible people.\u201d <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Orion Pictures Corp\/Courtesy E<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He explained\u00a0in a recent interview\u00a0that even he would be subject to cancel culture if he tried working for the BBC today. \u201cThe BBC have not come to me and said, \u2018Would you like to have some one-hour shows?\u2019 And if they did, I would say, \u2018Not on your nelly!\u2019 I wouldn\u2019t get five minutes into the first show before I\u2019d been canceled or censored,\u201d he proclaimed on BBC Radio 4\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d program.<\/p>\n<p>Cleese served as a keynote speaker at the\u00a0FreedomFest conference in Las Vegas\u00a0in July, where he noted, \u201cYou can only create in an atmosphere of freedom, where you\u2019re not checking everything you say critically before you move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also noted, \u201cA lot of comedians now are sitting there and when they think of something, they say something like, \u2018Can I get away with it? I don\u2019t think so. So-and-so got into trouble, and he said that, oh, she said that.\u2019 You see what I mean?
