\n Joseph James DeAngelo \u2014 the former police officer known as the \u201cGolden Gate Killer\u201d for his spree of rapes and murders across California in the 1970s and 80s\u00a0 \u2014 was sentenced Friday to multiple consecutive terms of life without parole.<\/p>\n

The punishment ensures that DeAngelo, 74, will die in jail for his crimes that terrified the Sacramento area \u2014 fear that lingered long after the killing stopped, as the case went cold for decades.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy listening to the survivors, I\u2019ve watched you. I could not help but wonder what you\u2019re thinking,\u201d Judge Michael Bowman told DeAngelo. \u201cAre you capable of comprehending the pain and anguish you have caused?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wearing a white face mask, DeAngelo was expressionless during the hours-long sentencing hearing held in the ballroom of Sacramento State University amid the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

But prior to being officially sentenced, he took off his mask and stood up to address the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve listened to all your statements. Each one of them,\u201d a gaunt-looking DeAngelo said, app<\/a>earing to choke up.<\/p>\n

He took a long pause before adding, \u201cAnd I\u2019m really sorry to everyone I\u2019ve hurt. Thank you, your honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June, DeAngelo pleaded guilty to 13 counts of first-degree murder dating back to the 1970s in a plea deal that spared him the death penalty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe court approves this plea. However, the court is not saying that Mr. DeAngelo doesn\u2019t deserve to have the death penalty imposed,\u201d said Bowman. \u201cMr. DeAngelo will spend the rest of his natural life and ultimately meet his death confined behind the walls of a state penitentiary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The sentencing Friday caps a days-long hearing of victim impact statements from families of DeAngelo\u2019s victims.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
